Sanctuaries of the Banished are ancient shrines filled with Banished Ancient Treasure. Each one is locked and requires a Sanctuary of the Banished Key to open. You can only acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
There are three Sanctuaries of the Banished in The Devil’s Roar. You can quickly identify them by scanning your Map Table and looking for a small dark triangle beneath the island. You can find Sanctuaries of the Banished on High and Safer Seas.
Where to find every Sanctuary of the Banished
The three sanctuaries are beneath the following islands:
- Sanctuary of the Veil – Brimstone Rock (Y18)
- Sanctuary of the Dark Widow – Cinder Islet (U14)
- Sanctuary of the Unending Flame – Flame’s End (V19)
You can spot the entrance to each by looking for an excavated staircase near the water’s edge on each island. Around the stairs that lead down into the shrine will be piles of ancient ruins and Black Powder Barrel remains.

How to get a Sanctuary of the Banished Key
You can get a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard. You can find sarcophagi holding Eternal Guards on large islands across the sea, with a higher chance in The Devil’s Roar. Light all three flames on a sarcophagus to summon the Eternal Guard, then take it down to claim its key. One key will open any of the three sanctuaries.

The Eternal Guard
The Eternal Guard is a formidable Banished Ancient that can cloak itself, summon reinforcements, and throw Poison Bombs. You cannot damage an Eternal Guard while it is cloaked, so time your attacks for the moments it reveals itself.

Banished Ancient Treasure
Inside each Sanctuary of the Banished are piles of Banished Ancient Treasure. There are five variants, one for each Trading Company, along with valuable Mermaid Gems. You can earn around 100,000 Gold if you sell every piece of Banished Ancient Treasure inside without an Emissary Grade or The Devil’s Roar boost.

Trident of the Banished
Each sanctuary also holds a Trident of the Banished, a poisonous weapon that fires projectiles in three sizes depending on how long you charge it. You can wield it against pirates and creatures alike or sell it to any Trading Company.

Locked Compartments
You’ll also discover two locked compartments inside each Sanctuary of the Banished that require an Ashen Key to unlock. Bring a couple of Ashen Keys on your voyage to plunder every last piece of treasure.

Secrets of the Banished Commendations
Taking down Eternal Guards, unlocking sanctuaries, and delivering Banished Ancient Treasure all progress the Secrets of the Banished Commendations. Completing them unlocks unique rewards, including the Chest of Banished Tribute Disguise.
