During their excavation for Sanctuaries of the Banished, the mysterious client also unearthed ancient sarcophagi. Inside each one is a fearsome Eternal Guard, waiting to be awakened. Defeating one will not only award you with a Sanctuary of the Banished Key, but also allow you to complete several Secrets of the Banished Commendations.
Where to find Eternal Guards
You can randomly find Eternal Guards on large islands across the Sea of Thieves. While you can find them in any region, you have a higher chance of finding one in The Devil’s Roar. You’ll only ever find one per island. We’ve found sarcophagi on Fetcher’s Rest, Flintlock Peninsula, Ruby’s Fall, and Ashen Reaches.
There is also a limited number of Eternal Guard sarcophagi that can be active at a time, so you might have to search several large islands before discovering one.
As you explore a large island, look for a patch of purple smoke billowing around a stone sarcophagus. You’ll also want to listen for ethereal music that grows louder as you approach the sarcophagus. Once you find one, light the three flames on it to summon the Eternal Guard.

The Eternal Guard is a challenging enemy that will throw Spears, fire Poison Darts, and deploy Poison Bombs. Upon defeat, it will reward you with a Sanctuary of the Banished Key you can use at any of the three Sanctuaries of the Banished.
