There are 22 commendations for you to unlock during Season 18, Return to The Devil’s Roar. While many are straightforward, several can take time to complete.
To complete all the available commendations, you must take down Eternal Guards, unlock Sanctuaries of the Banished, and successfully deliver dozens of Banished Ancient Treasure while navigating the perils of The Devil’s Roar!
Hunting the Banished
Use hunting spears on an Eternal Guard.
To complete this Commendation, you must use ten Hunting Spears against an Eternal Guard. You can damage the same Eternal Guard ten times with Hunting Spears or damage ten different Eternal Guards.
You can purchase Hunting Spears from any Hunter’s Call representative or find them randomly throughout the Sea of Thieves. Specifically, you can find them washed up on island beaches, inside Shipwrecks, and from defeating Krakens, Megalodons, and Skeleton Ships.
The Hunting Spear will glint white, making it easy to spot from a distance.
Boom of the Banished
Damage an Eternal Guard with a Black Powder Barrel.
To complete this Commendation, you must damage an Eternal Guard with a Black Powder Barrel. While cloaked, the Eternal Guard is invulnerable to all attacks. So, you’ll need to detonate your Black Powder Barrel during one of the quick moments where the Eternal Guard is not cloaked.
Before finding an Eternal Guard, you’ll want to get a Black Powder Barrel. You can find Black Powder Barrels randomly in Smugglers’ Caches, Smugglers’ Shipwrecks, and Smuggling Skeleton Ships. You can also find them from the Smugglers’ Route Run Voyage and Smugglers’ Messages in Bottles.
During Season 18, you can dive to a Smugglers’ Route Run Voyage to The Devil’s Roar, speeding up the process of acquiring a Black Powder Barrel and finding an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a Black Powder Barrel and are fighting an Eternal Guard, you’ll have to wait for the Eternal Guard to reveal itself and damage it with the Black Powder Barrel.
The Black Powder Barrel’s fuse lasts about 10 seconds. So, once the Eternal Guard cloaks itself, wait about three seconds and ignite the Black Powder Barrel.
Follow the Eternal Guard’s trail of purple smoke and wait for it to show itself. If you are not close enough to the Eternal Guard when it uncloaks, or the Eternal Guard cloaks again before your Black Powder Barrel will explode, defuse the Black Powder Barrel by pressing Left Trigger or Right Mouse Button and try again.
One of your best opportunities is when the Eternal Guard attempts to summon reinforcements. That ability takes the longest for the Eternal Guard to complete. When you see it pounding its spear against the ground, you know you have enough time to detonate the Black Powder Barrel.
Trident Takedown
Damage an Eternal Guard with a Trident of the Banished.
To complete this Commendation, you must damage an Eternal Guard with a Trident of the Banished.
You can find Tridents of the Banished inside Sanctuaries of the Banished. However, to open a sanctuary, you must acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key from an Eternal Guard. So, you’ll need to defeat one Eternal Guard before you can damage another with a Trident of the Banished.
Once you have a Trident and are fighting an Eternal Guard, charge a projectile and release as soon as the Eternal Guard exits its cloak.
Nice Try
Use a Lure Dart on an Eternal Guard.
To complete this Commendation, you must use a Lure Dart on an Eternal Guard. Equip the Blowpipe from your Armoury and change your darts to the Lure Dart.
Once you are fighting an Eternal Guard, charge your Blowpipe and release as soon as the Eternal Guard exits its cloak. If you manage to hit the Eternal Guard, you will unlock the Commendation.
Flame of the Forgotten
Defeat a Banished Ancient Skeleton with a Chest of Rage explosion.
To complete this Commendation, you must defeat a Banished Ancient Skeleton with a Chest of Rage explosion. While you fight the Eternal Guard, it will summon several Banished Ancient Skeletons. Lure them to a Chest of Rage and damage the Chest of Rage until it explodes and kills the Skeletons.
You can find Chests of Rage randomly washed up on island beaches, in Barrels of Plenty, and by defeating Ashen Lords.
Eternal Fighter
Defeat Eternal Guards.
To complete this Commendation, you must defeat ten Eternal Guards.
You can randomly find an Eternal Guard on large islands in every region. However, you are more likely to find one on a large island in The Devil’s Roar.
To find one, explore any large island and look for swirling purple lights coming from the sarcophagus. You’ll also want to listen for ethereal music that grows louder as you approach the sarcophagus.
Eternal Warrior
Complete all Eternal Guard Commendations.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete the Hunting the Banished, Boom of the Banished, Trident Takedown, Nice Try, Flame of the Forgotten, and Eternal Fighter Commendation.
Robber of the Sanctuary of the Veil
Unlock the Sanctuary of the Veil.
To complete this Commendation, you must unlock the Sanctuary of the Veil. You can unlock the Sanctuary of the Veil by obtaining a Sanctuary of the Banished Key after defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, sail to Brimstone Rock. You’ll find stairs down into the sanctuary on the North side of the island. Use the key on the large Ancient Door, and you will unlock the Sanctuary of the Veil.
Plunderer of the Sanctuary of the Dark Widow
Unlock the Sanctuary of the Dark Widow.
To complete this Commendation, you must unlock the Sanctuary of the Dark Widow. You can unlock the Sanctuary of the Dark Widow by acquiring a Sanctuary of the Banished Key after defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, sail to Cinder Islet. You’ll find stairs down into the sanctuary on the South side of the island. Use the key on the large Ancient Door, and you will unlock the Sanctuary of the Dark Widow.
Looter of the Sanctuary of the Unending Flame
Unlock the Sanctuary of the Unending Flame.
To complete this Commendation, you must unlock the Sanctuary of the Unending Flame. You can unlock the Sanctuary of the Unending Flame by obtaining a Sanctuary of the Banished Key after defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, sail to Flame’s End. You’ll find stairs down into the sanctuary on the North side of the island. Use the key on the large Ancient Door, and you will unlock the Sanctuary of the Unending Flame.
Thief of the Banished Ancients
Open locked compartments inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
To complete this Commendation, you must open nine locked compartments inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
Inside each Sanctuary of the Banished are piles of Banished Ancient Treasure and two locked compartments. To unlock the compartments, you must use an Ashen Key.
You can find Ashen Keys by defeating Ashen Guardians that randomly appear on islands, sinking the Captain’s Skeleton Ship during a Skeleton Fleet World Event, and defeating an Ashen Key Master during Skeleton Fort World Events.
Sanctuary Invader
Complete all Sanctuary of the Banished Commendations.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete the Robber of the Sanctuary of the Veil, Plunderer of the Sanctuary of the Dark Widow, Looter of the Sanctuary of the Unending Flame, and Thief of the Banished Ancients Commendations.
Provisioner of Banished Keys
Sell Sanctuary of the Banished Keys.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell three Sanctuary of the Banished Keys. You can sell them to any Trading Company to receive credit. To acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key, you must defeat an Eternal Guard.
Trader of Banished Tablets
Return Banished Ancient Rune Tablets to The Smugglers’ League.
To complete this Commendation, you must return ten Banished Ancient Run Tablets to The Smugglers’ League. You can only find Banished Ancient Rune Tablets inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
There are three Sanctuaries of the Banished: one on Brimstone Rock, Cinder Islet, and Flame’s End. However, to open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you’ll need to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, open any Sanctuary for the Banished, and you’ll find several Banished Ancient Rune Tablets inside. You can sell them any Smugglers’ League Representatives, including the two in the Devil’s Roar, for credit.
Bringer of Banished Ancient Tribute
Sell Chests of Banished Tribute.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell 30 Chests of Banished Tribute to the Gold Hoarders or Reaper’s Bones. You can only find Chests of Banished Tribute inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
There are three Sanctuaries of the Banished: one on Brimstone Rock, Cinder Islet, and Flame’s End. However, to open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you’ll need to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, open any Sanctuary for the Banished, and you’ll find several Chests of Banished Tribute inside. You can sell them any Gold Hoarder Representative, including the one in the Devil’s Roar, for credit.
Diviner of Banished Ancient Secrets
Sell Skulls of Dark Banishment.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell 30 Skulls of Dark Banishment to the Order of Souls or Reaper’s Bones. You can only find Skulls of Dark Banishment inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
There are three Sanctuaries of the Banished: one on Brimstone Rock, Cinder Islet, and Flame’s End. However, to open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you’ll need to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, open any Sanctuary for the Banished, and you’ll find several Skulls of Dark Banishment inside. You can sell them any Order of Souls Representative, including the one in the Devil’s Roar, for credit.
Merchant of Banished Ancient Knowledge
Sell Banished Merchant Logs.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell 30 Banished Merchant Logs to the Merchant Alliance or Reaper’s Bones. You can only find Banished Merchant Logs inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
There are three Sanctuaries of the Banished: one on Brimstone Rock, Cinder Islet, and Flame’s End. However, to open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you’ll need to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, open any Sanctuary for the Banished, and you’ll find several Banished Merchant Logs inside. You can sell them any Merchant Alliance Representative, including the one in the Devil’s Roar, for credit.
Hunter of Banished Ancient Goods
Sell Hunting Tributes of the Banished.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell 30 Hunting Tributes of the Banished to the Hunter’s Call or Reaper’s Bones. You can only find Hunting Tributes of the Banished inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
There are three Sanctuaries of the Banished: one on Brimstone Rock, Cinder Islet, and Flame’s End. However, to open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you’ll need to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, open any Sanctuary for the Banished, and you’ll find several Hunting Tributes of the Banished inside. You can sell them any Hunter’s Call Representative, including the ones in the Devil’s Roar, for credit.
Seeker of Banished Relics
Sell Tridents of the Banished.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell five Tridents of the Banished. You can only find Tridents of the Banished inside Sanctuaries of the Banished.
There are three Sanctuaries of the Banished: one on Brimstone Rock, Cinder Islet, and Flame’s End. However, to open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you’ll need to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a key, open any Sanctuary for the Banished, and you’ll find several Tridents of the Banished inside. You can sell them any Trading Company Representative, including the ones in the Devil’s Roar, for credit.
Master of Banished Treasures
Complete all Banished Ancient Treasure Commendations.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete the Provisioner of Banished Keys, Trader of Banished Tablets, Bringer of Banished Ancient Tribute, Diviner of Banished Ancient Secrets, Merchant of Banished Ancient Knowledge, Hunter of Banished Ancient Goods, and Seeker of Banished Relics.
Contrabandists' Crooked Chronicles
Read both journals in the Smugglers’ Hideouts in The Devil’s Roar.
To complete this Commendation, you must read both journals in the Smugglers’ Hideouts in The Devil’s Roar.
There is one journal on Fetcher’s Rest that belongs to Saltbones Elias and one journal on Ruby’s Fall that belongs to Laughing Fox Lucia.
You can find Elias’ Journal in his hideout in the archway on the North side of Fetcher’s Rest. It is sitting on a wooden crate next to him.
And you can find Lucia’s Journal in her hideout in the tunnel that runs North to South in the middle of Ruby’s Fall. It is sitting on wooden crates across from her.
Master of Banished Ancient Secrets
Complete all Banished Ancient Commendations.
Smuggler of Banished Keys
Return Sanctuary of the Banished Keys to The Smugglers’ League.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell five Sanctuary of the Banished Keys to The Smugglers’ League. To acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key, you must defeat an Eternal Guard. You can randomly find Eternal Guards on large islands throughout the Sea of Thieves. However, you have a higher chance of finding them on large islands in The Devil’s Roar.
Dark Widow Decipherer
Read Belle’s Journal of the Dark Widow.
To complete this Commendation, you must read Bell’s Journal of the Dark Widow on Cinder Islet. You can find the journal just outside the Sanctuary door.
Veil Viewer
Read Belle’s Journal of the Veil
To complete this Commendation, you must read Belle’s Journal of the Veil on Brimstone Rock. You can find the journal inside the Sanctuary. As the journal is inside the Sanctuary, you’ll need to find an Eternal Guard, defeat it for a Sanctuary of the Banished Key, and use the key on the Sanctuary door to access the journal.
Finder of the Unending Flame
Read Belle’s Journal of the Unending Flame.
To complete this Commendation, you must read Belle’s Journal of the Unending Flame on Flame’s End. You can find the journal inside the Sanctuary. As the journal is inside the Sanctuary, you’ll need to find an Eternal Guard, defeat it for a Sanctuary of the Banished Key, and use the key on the Sanctuary door to access the journal.
Know It All
Read Belle’s Journals in all three Sanctuaries of the Banished.
To complete this Commendation, you must read all three of Belle’s journals in The Devil’s Roar. You can find one on Cinder Islet, another on Brimstone Rock, and the last one on Flame’s End. The journals on Brimstone Rock and Flame’s End are inside their respective Sanctuaries, so you’ll need to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key and open the Sanctuary before you can read them.
Ducal Disciple
Complete all the Client’s requests.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete all the Client’s requests.
This Commendation follows the Smugglers’ League and mysterious client story from Season 17. As it is a very in-depth Commendation, we have a dedicated guide to it here! Before you can begin, you’ll have to have completed the Clandestine Contact Commendation from Season 17.
Garrison Champion
Complete Ashen Garrison Raid Voyages.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete five Ashen Garrison Raid Voyages.
If you are Reputation Level 25 with any Trading Company, you can dive to an on-demand Ashen Garrison through your Quest Table. You’ll find the Raid on an Ashen Garrison Voyage under each Trading Company’s Raid Voyages.
You can complete the Raid Voyage for any Trading Company to progress the Commendation.
Garrison Conqueror
Complete emergent Ashen Garrisons.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete three emergent Ashen Garrisons. Emergent Ashen Garrisons are Ashen Garrisons you sail to instead of diving to. As long as the Ashen Garrison wasn’t started by any crew using their Quest Table, the Ashen Garrison is emergent and will count toward the Commendation. The treasure inside the Treasury will not be exclusive to a single Trading Company if it is emergent.
Ashen Oar Rival
Dock Rowboats at an Ashen Garrison.
To complete this Commendation, you must dock three Rowboats at an Ashen Garrison. Docking the same Rowboat three times at the same Ashen Garrison will only count once. You’ll need to dock three different Rowboats to complete the Commendation.
There are several locations to dock a rowboat between the Sea Wall and the inner Garrison. You’ll want to look for scaffolding along the inner Garrison wall by the water that has oars attached to it.
Row your Rowboat next to the scaffolding and interact with the prompt to dock your rowboat.
If you are on King’s Chalice Garrison, you can quickly dock the Rowboat in the Vault along the walkway that overlooks the water.
Compartment Crook
Open locked compartments in the Ashen Garrison’s Treasury.
To complete this Commendation, you must open 10 locked compartments in the Ashen Garrison’s Treasury.
Each Ashen Garrison has four locked compartments in its Treasury that you can open. To open one, you must use an Ashen Key. You can find at least one Ashen Key in furniture around the Ashen Garrison. Since there are four you can open, you can bring a few Ashen Keys with you to make sure you progress the Commendation several times for each raid on an Ashen Garrison.
You can find additional Ashen Keys by defeating:
- Ashen Key Masters during a Skeleton Fort World Event
- Emergent Ashen Guardians on islands
- Captain Skeleton Ships on the final wave of a Skeleton Fleet World Event
Garrison Gladiator
Defeat skeletons at an Ashen Garrison.
To complete this Commendation, you must defeat 30 skeletons at an Ashen Garrison. The skeletons on the sea wall and inside the inner Ashen Garrison will count toward the Commendation. You can use any weapon of your choice to defeat them to progress the Commendation.
Open Up!
Lower the Sea Gate on an Ashen Garrison.
To complete this Commendation, you must lower the Sea Gate on an Ashen Garrison.
To lower the Sea Gate you must interact with the Sea Gate’s pulley. You can find the pulley on scaffolding across from the Sea Gate.
You can reach the pulley by using a Grapple Gun to reach it or wait until you have made your way inside the inner Garrison. Once you reach the pulley, interact with it and fully lower the gate. As soon as the gate is as low as it can go, you will complete the Commendation.
Guardian? More Like Dust-odian!
Use a Trident of the Banished on the Custodian of the Treasury.
To complete this Commendation, you must use a Trident of the Banished on the Custodian of the Treasury.
You can find Tridents of the Banished inside Sanctuaries of the Banished. To open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you must acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key by defeating an Eternal Guard.
Once you have a Trident of the Banished, you’ll need to progress your way through the Ashen Garrison until you find a Custodian of the Treasury inside the Vault. Defeat the Custodian of the Treasury with the Trident of the Banished to complete the Commendation.
Winning with Twinning
Defeat skeletons on an Ashen Garrison while Mimicking one.
To complete this Commendation, you must defeat 15 skeletons on an Ashen Garrison while Mimicking one.
You’ll want to scale the Ashen Garrison with a Blowpipe or switch to one once you find an Armoury on the Garrison. Once you have your Blowpipe, switch your Darts to Mimic Darts, shoot any Skeleton to mimic them, and then defeat as many Skeletons as you can. The mimic effect lasts about two minutes.
You don’t have to kill all 15 with a single Mimic Dart, so you can mimic another Skeleton to continue killing more and working on the Commendation.
An Oath Fulfilled
Sell Oath Lighthouse Logs.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell five Oath Lighthouse Logs. You can only find Oath Lighthouse Logs inside the Treasury of the Servant’s Oath Garrison. Specifically, they are in the Treasury’s locked compartments. At least one of the four locked compartments is guaranteed to contain a Lighthouse Log.
To open a locked compartment, you’ll need an Ashen Key. Since there are four locked compartments, you’ll want to collect four Ashen Keys to increase your chances of finding one.
- Grade I: Sell one Oath Lighthouse Log
- Grade II: Sell three Oath Lighthouse Logs
- Grade III: Sell five Oath Lighthouse Logs
My Cup Runneth Over
Sell Chalice Lighthouse Logs.
To complete this Commendation, you must sell five Chalice Lighthouse Logs. You can only find Chalice Lighthouse Logs inside the Treasury of the King’s Chalice Garrison. Specifically, they are in the Treasury’s locked compartments. At least one of the four locked compartments is guaranteed to contain a Lighthouse Log.
To open a locked compartment, you’ll need an Ashen Key. Since there are four locked compartments, you’ll want to collect four Ashen Keys to increase your chances of finding one.
- Grade I: Sell one Chalice Lighthouse Log
- Grade II: Sell three Chalice Lighthouse Logs
- Grade III: Sell five Chalice Lighthouse Logs
Lighthouse Log Vendor
Complete all Lighthouse Log Commendations.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete the An Oath Fulfilled and My Cup Runneth Over Commendations.
Volcanic Victorious
Complete all Commendations for Season 18: Act 3.
