Anyone can call themselves a captain. But, if you truly want to be a captain, you’ll first need to own your ship, name it, and decorate it. Then, once you have a vessel to call your own, it’s time to start earning Milestones, planning your crew’s voyages, and utilizing The Sovereign’s elite services.
With Captains of Adventure, it’s your time to shine, Captain!
How to purchase a Ship
Before setting sail on your next adventure, select the ‘My Ships’ option instead of choosing a ship type. If this is your first ship, you will see a prompt to purchase a brand new vessel to call your own. There are no prerequisites to owning a ship other than having enough gold.

Your options to choose from are a Sloop, Brigantine, or Galleon. Each ship costs a different amount. The larger the vessel, the more expensive it is.
A Sloop costs 250,000 gold, a Brigantine costs 375,000 gold, and a Galleon costs 500,000 gold.
You can own more than one ship, so you don’t need to worry too much about which one you want. However, you’ll probably want to start your fleet with the ship you will sail the most.

How many ships can you own?
You can own up to 15 individual ships at once. However, you’ll need to progress through your ship’s Milestones and earn a Legendary Title before buying another of the same type.
How to name your ship
Once you have purchased your ship, you will need to name it before you can set sail. Your ship’s name can be twenty characters long. However, it cannot contain any numbers, special characters, and end or start with a space.
Once you have named your ship, you are ready to sail as a Captain!

How to decorate your ship with Decorations
Now that you are a Captain, you have access to a whole new suite of ship cosmetics, Ship Decorations!
While Ship Customizations focus on the more structural elements of a ship, such as a hull, sails, and figureheads, the Ship Decorations are focused on the Captain’s Cabin!
The next time you browse the Ship Customization Chest as a Captain, you will see the Ship Decoration section. Inside, you will find cosmetics for Captain’s Tables, Captain’s Drapes, Captain’s Beds, Captain’s Rugs, Captain’s Chairs, Captain’s Chandeliers, and Captain’s Curtains.

The Captain’s Chairs, Chandeliers, and Curtains are only for Galleons, so don’t expect to find a Captain’s Chair on your sloop suddenly.
Ship Decorations are an exclusive perk for Captains, so you cannot equip them on non-captained ships.
These decorations can cost two to three times as much as the foundational ship parts.

How to decorate your ship with Trinkets
Trinkets are another way to decorate your ship and are a great way to share your pirate’s identity visually. There are two types of Trinkets: Ornaments and Trophies.
Ornaments help set a ton in your Captain’s Cabin, while Trophies represent a significant accomplishment you achieved during your adventures!
You can place Trophies almost anywhere on your ship. There are pre-set locations, but they range from the walls, shelves, barrels, and floor!
To see what Trinkets you can unlock, speak with any Shipwright and browse their Trinket Shop. You can see all the possible Trinkets and the requirements you need to meet to unlock them.

How to save your ship's cosmetics
One convenient perk of being a Captain is the ability to save your ship customizations between sailing sessions for a small fee.
To save your ship customizations, start by interacting with the Ship Customization Chest at any Outpost. Then, browse through the different cosmetics and select the one you want to save to your ship. When you find it, you will see an option to ‘Save Item to Ship.’ The ‘Save Item to Ship’ option will save your choice for all future sailing sessions until you save a different cosmetic.
Each cosmetic you save will cost gold. The price is dependent on the cosmetic type. For example, Figureheads and Sails will cost more than Wheels and Capstans. The price will range from approximately 2000 to 7000 gold.
Since Flags are not part of the Shipwright’s Customizations, Flags will automatically save after equipping them through the Flag Box.
Only the Captain of the ship can save cosmetics. Crews can continue applying their liveries just as before for free. However, the crew’s changes will not persist.
Captains can also quickly ‘Revert Ship to Saved Items’ using the Ship Customization Chest.

How to set your ship's permissions
As a Captain, you can control if your crew is allowed to change your ship’s customizations. Go to the Captain’s Permissions section in My Crew to allow or disallow your crew from customizing your ship. You can change this setting at any time!
What happens if the Captain leaves?
As soon as you leave your sailing session as a Captain, your ship will become uncaptained immediately. When your ship becomes uncaptained, the ship and your crew can no longer earn Milestones.
Once your upcaptained ship sinks, it will respawn as a standard, non-captained ship.
When you set sail the next time as a Captain on that same ship, it will be in the same state it was when you left.
How to restore your ship
Your ship will acquire some natural wear and tear as you sail the sea. Restoration will allow you to remove any ghastly battle scars you might have gained while at sea and return your ship to a spotless condition. However, this service is not free. The restoration cost is relative to the damage your ship has sustained.
Less impactful damage such as repaired holes will cost less than significant damage like damaged ship parts.
You can either restore your ship before setting sail or through the Shipwright.
It’s important to note that your ship will be in a Seaworthy state each time you set sail. A Seaworthy vessel means that your wheel, masts, and capstan will all be in working order at the start of your sailing session.
Because you don’t need to worry about damage, restoring your ship before setting sail is cheaper since the restoration is only removing cosmetic blemishes. Conversely, restoring your ship during your sailing session repairs both cosmetic flaws and severe damage such as cracked masts or a broken capstan.

How to dismantle your ship
If you want to remove a ship from your fleet, you can permanently remove it by dismantling it. However, dismantling your ship will not only remove the ship from your fleet but also delete all Milestone progress and Trinkets you earned for the ship.
To dismantle your ship, choose the Dismantle option before setting sail after choosing your ship.

How to stock your ship from the Shipwright
Shipwrights now give Captains the ability to quickly prepare for their journey by buying supplies from them that are delivered directly to the Resource Barrels of their ships. This streamlined process of provisioning your vessel will have you heading out to sea faster than ever!
You can use this exclusive Captain perk at any time during your sailing session.
The Shipwright’s stocks come with few resources than the Merchant Alliance Resource Crates but have more variety. They are also cheaper since they do not come with the benefit of the crate itself.
The stocks you can purchase include:
- Wood (30) – 3500 gold
- Cannonballs (30) – 3500 gold
- Throwables and Chainshots (selection of 20) – 3500 gold
- Fruit (selection of 30) – 3500 gold
- Uncooked Meat (selection of 30) – 3500 gold
- Bait (selection of 30) – 3500 gold

How to earn Milestones
There are two types of Milestones: Pirate Milestones and Ship Milestones.
You can earn Pirate Milestones while you are on a Captained ship. So, that means you can be Captain or part of a Captained crew. It isn’t necessary to be Captain to work towards Pirate Milestones. As long as you are on a Captained ship, you are eligible to earn Pirate Milestones.
Your ship can earn Ship Milestones while it is out at sea. So, to earn Ship Milestones, you’ll need to be Captain so you can use your ship.
There are dozens of Milestones to earn, each catering to a particular playstyle. There are Milestones for selling treasure, vanquishing Ocean Crawlers, and even fishing! As you make progress towards your Milestones, you will unlock Trophies that you can use to decorate your ship!
You can view all the Milestones and their requirements in your Ship’s Log.
If you want to go deeper into the Milestone progression system, you can check out our detailed guide here.

How to customize your Ship's Banner
As a Captain, you can earn customizable Banners from completing Milestones. The Ship’s Banner always contains the ship’s name as well as the Captain’s gamertag. In addition, you can customize the Ship’s Title and the look of the Banner.
You can customize your Ship’s Banner at the Ship Customization Chest near the Shipwright on any Outpost.

Who can see Ship's Banners?
If you are a Captain, you and your crew can see your Ship Banner when approaching your ship for the first time or after it has respawned.
To see another ship’s Ship Banner, you must look at the ship through your Spyglass. Just as you can see their Ship Banner, other pirates can see your Ship Banner through their Spyglass.
How to use The Sovereigns
The Sovereigns only deal with the most refined pirates, so of course, you have access to their convenient service as a Captain.
To use The Sovereigns, give a Sovereign representative any treasure you collect during your sailing session. They will then automatically deliver the treasure to the Trading Companies for you free of charge. You will receive 100% of the gold the treasure you give them is worth.
You can find The Sovereigns at any Outpost on an easy-to-access dock. The Sovereign huts are equipped with harpoons, lifts, and rowboat docks for quick selling of loot!
