All pirates on the Sea of Thieves have a variety of ways to grow as a pirate, from raising their Trading Company reputation to unlocking Renown Levels throughout the Season. Captains, however, have their very own exclusive progression system: Milestones.
More than a progression system, Milestones are a reflection of how you play Sea of Thieves. No matter your playstyle, you will advance Milestones to earn cosmetics that celebrate what you enjoy about being a pirate the most!
What are Milestones?
Milestones are a permanent record of you and your ship’s accomplishments.
Pirate Milestones are tied to your pirate and can be earned while you are Captain or in another Captain’s crew. Ship Milestones are connected to your ship and can only be earned while your vessel is out at sea.
Both types of Milestones are measured in Classes. Think of Classes like levels, and each Milestone starts at zero. Meeting the requirements of a Milestone will increase its Class.
When you reach certain Classes, you will unlock rewards such as cosmetics for your Captain’s Cabin and Trinkets to decorate your ship.
There is no limit to how far you can advance through a Milestone as you increase the Class of each Milestone indefinitely.
You can view your Pirate and Ship Milestones in the Ship’s Log.

Pirate Milestones
Pirate Milestones are personal and reflect the actions pirates have completed while sailing on a Captained ship. So whether you are a crewmate or Captain, you can increase the Class of a Pirate Milestone.
It’s also important to note that you don’t have to own a Captained ship to earn Pirate Milestones. Instead, you can join a fellow pirate’s Captained ship and work towards any Pirate Milestones you like.
Ship Milestones
Your ship can earn Ship Milestones from the actions of the crew sailing the ship. As Ship Milestones are a record of the ship’s accomplishments, the Ship Milestones are specific to that ship. So, you could have a fleet of vessels, each with individually earned Ship Milestones.
Milestone Alignments
Each Milestone fits into an Alignment that represents a type of playstyle. For example, any Milestones related to vanquishing skeletons, Ocean Crawlers, and Phantoms fall under ‘The Feared’ Alignment.
The Alignments available for Pirates and Ships are:
- The Gold Seeker
- The Voyager
- The Emissary
- The Hunter
- The Feared
- The Rogue
- The Ill-Fated
- The Captain (Pirate only)
The Classes you reach for the Milestones in each Alignment will be summed up and represent the Class for the Milestone Alignment. So if you earn Class 3 in the ‘Days at Sea’ Milestone and Class 4 in the ‘Islands Visited’ Milestone, you will be Class 6 in ‘The Voyager’ Milestone Alignment.

Milestone Rewards
You can earn rewards by reaching specific Classes within Pirate and Ship Milestones.
When you unlock a reward through a Pirate Milestone, it is unlocked for your pirate and you can use it on any ship. The rewards you can unlock through Pirate Milestones include Captain’s Cabin decorations, Titles, and Trinkets.
When you unlock a reward through a Ship Milestone, you can only use it on that ship. The rewards you can unlock through Ship Milestones are Ship Crests, Ship Titles, Ship Logbooks, and Flags.
