If you’ve progressed to Revenge of the Morningstar, that means you must have completed Fate of the Morningstar. Through an eerie lantern glow, you watched the horror that befell the Morningstar Crew.

Yet, why did this fate come to pass? That is the question these journals answer in Revenge of the Morningstar. These journals were penned by the Morningstar Captain himself—Captain Slate.

Here you’ll find the locations and text for each Journal in the Revenge of the Morningstar.

These journals were placed at various stops the Morningstar Crew made as they attempted to sail out of Graymarrow’s reach.

The text in these journals will be rather enjoyable for any pirates who have the novel Sea of Thieves: Athena’s Fortune.

Both Graymarrow and Captain Slate figure prominently in that novel, and have several encounters. To Captain Slate, those encounters seem a lifetime ago—to Graymarrow, in some sense, they are.

Ah, but you are likely pursuing your own ends: a commendation for finding all five journals. So, we will begin with the locations.

Revenge of the Morningstar Journal Commendation

Where are the Revenge of the Morningstar Tall Tale Journals?

Remember:
These journals appear only if the Revenge of the Morningstar Tall Tale is active!

Dark as this tale is, it is perhaps no wonder that it begins in The Wilds. Sail on over to Dagger Tooth Outpost, then seek out Sandra the shipwright. Off to her right, you’ll see a book.

Vote on that book and listen close. Sandra will divulge the place where the Morningstar’s wreckage sleeps beneath the waves. It is also the location of your first journal: Boulder Cay.

Per Sandra’s instructions, sail on over to Boulder Cay. Except, you won’t be diving down into the shipwreck, like you would to retrieve the Captain’s Log. No, this journal has been kept safe on dry land.

On the Southwest side of Boulder Cay, there is a rather triangular—or tooth-shaped—rock. Leaning against this rock, you’ll see a few barrels and a stack of crates.

You’ll find this journal resting in the topmost crate.

Your next destination will provide a bit of respite. Sail on over to Sanctuary Outpost, and do what any self-respecting pirate would: head straight for the tavern.

If your bleary eyes can still read after a few tankards, stumble your way over to the crates in the corner. It seems someone has left a little book behind.

Your next stop is Cannon Cove.

There is a cliff overlooking the south side of the island. Near that cliff stand a couple of barrels under a large tree. Take a look behind those barrels, and you should see the journal.

Admittedly, there are many barrels and several little cliff hangings on Cannon Cove. We’ve done our best to describe its location— and hopefully, the image helps—but this one might still seem a bit tricky.

If so, you might find it easier using the interactive map. Just click the link below the image.

Your next destination is Sunken Grove. Sunken Grove has three little islets floating off the main island’s coast. Head to the islet on the Northeast.

There you’ll see a crooked palm tree shading some resources, a lantern, and your next journal.

Sail to Marauder’s Arch for this journal. If you’ve sailed here before, you might have received a bit of welcoming cannon fire from a pesky skellie on the Southwest side of the island.

This island has three levels, and this cannon is on the middle level, and there isn’t a way to clamber up to it from the Southwest. So, you could cannon yourself up to this spot, or you could go to the northwest side of the island where you can trek up the hill and around the isle on foot.

Once you reach the cannon, you’ll see a couple of barrels nearby. The journal is sitting on top.

What do the Revenge of the Morningstar Tall Tale Journals Say?

The Text for the Revenge of the Morningstar Journal #1

This journal is titled, “Assessing the Enemy.

It reads:

“Know your enemy.” — Sun-Tzu, ‘The Art of War’

Who is Graymarrow, the wretch that pursues us endlessly in our quest for the Shroudbreaker?

Long ago, I crossed paths with a gaunt and pitiless fellow whose crew may as well have been his slaves.

Can this be the same man, fallen victim to a curse that has hardened what little heart he once possessed?

A man at the George and Kraken tavern claims that he can tell me more…
Revenge Journal #1 on Boulder Cay

The Text for the Revenge of the Morningstar Journal #2

This journal is titled, “Accepting the Impossible

It reads:

It seems that my suspicions were correct. The Skeleton Lord who now pursues us is a bitter rival from my past.

I have met Gold Hoarders with skin like Midas’ own, and they claim to be a consequence of handling cursed coin.

Can a healthy, flesh and blood man really be transformed, in such a fashion as to command legions of the undead?

On this strange, unknowable Sea of Thieves, it sometimes seems as though anything is possible.

I shall consider the matter further as we make for Cannon Cove.
Revenge Journal #2 on Sanctuary

The Text for the Revenge of the Morningstar Journal #3

This journal is titled, “On the Nature of Curses

It reads:

There are whispers, low and fearful, that Graymarrow has begun to wield some fell powers of his own.

To whit, he has found a way to ‘maroon’ – for want of another term – the spirits of those he bests in battle.

Souls imprisoned by such a curse can never find their way to the Ferry of the Damned, and remain lost.

We sail at top speed to Sunken Grove, out in the Wilds. I am taking night watch. I doubt that I could sleep tonight…
Revenge Journal #3 on Cannon Cove

The Text for the Revenge of the Morningstar Journal #4

This journal is titled, “An Endless Pursuit

It reads:

The more I learn about Graymarrow, the more certain I am that we must recover and reunite the Shroudbreaker’s pieces.

At this point, escaping into the Shroud may be our only means of escaping him. We need rest. He requires none.

Fontaine believes we should surrender the one Shroudbreaker fragment we do possess, and plead for clemency.

I, however, fear it is far too late. This chase has become a matter of pride for Graymarrow, and he wishes us gone for good.

A confrontation seems inevitable, yet still we flee, speeding to Marauder’s Archa s our last supplies run dry…
Revenge Journal #4 on Sunken Grove

The Text for the Revenge of the Morningstar Journal #5

This journal is titled, “Too Little, Too Late…

It reads:

He has a weakness! At last, here at Marauder’s Arch, I was able to seize orders scrawled by Graymarrow himself.

By his own hand, I have learned that even Graymarrow must sometimes rest his wicked bones below the soil.

If he could be taken by surprise, it might be possible to defeat him… but our food is gone. Our cannons empty.

Instead, we must limp back to Boulder Cay, beach our vessel in the shallows there and make our final stand together.

My crew terrified, we but sail on. I could not be more proud, and can only hope that one day we shall be avenged.
Revenge Journal #5 on Marauder's Arch

Congratulations!

If you followed along with this guide, then you’ve sailed along the very same route the Morningstar took as Graymarrow hunted them down. Having read each journal along the way, you have now earned the commendation: Whispers from the Morningstar.

Reading through Captain Slate’s writings, you’ve gotten a glimpse into the darker curses that haunt the seas, the powers all Skeleton Lords wield, and a far more sinister power only a few Skeleton Lords dare to unleash.

Note: if you check your commendations page, and your journals commendation has not yet unlocked, all is not lost. Depart from this commendations page. Then, return.

In your absence, it seems someone will have avenged you…
