Looking for how to complete the commendation ‘Raising the Dead’? Look no further, me hearty!
In the Tall Tale ‘A Pirate’s Life,’ twixt grottos and ferries, there is a new island to explore: Sailor’s Grave.
If pirates stick to a straight and narrow path of progression, they won’t see much of Sailor’s Grave.
That’s where these commendations come in! A Pirate’s Life features a side quest, in which pirates complete a sequence of six commendations in one grand adventure!
The set includes the following commendations, in this order:
- A Powerful Thirst
- Raising the Dead
- Treasure for the Dead
- Ship of Thieves
- Secret of the Grave
- The Crew of the Headless Monkey
Technically, you could complete ‘Raising the Dead’ and ‘Treasure for the Dead’ before ‘A Powerful Thirst.’ However, you’ll need to do all three before doing ‘Ship of Thieves,’ savvy?
Let’s begin the adventure, shall we?
The Starting Point for 'Raising the Dead'
As we mentioned above, this adventure takes place in Sailor’s Grave. Thus, to begin this commendation you must first complete several steps. These steps are listed in the “A Pirate’s Life Tall Tale Guide,” as follows:
- Vote for the Tall Tale.
- Sail through the Mythical Portal.
- Sail through the Tunnel of the Damned.
- Dock your ship.
- Find the cliff’s entrance.
- Navigate “Dead Man’s Grotto.”
- Enter Sailor’s Grave.
- Find and Rescue the Cursed Captain.
If you’d like a bit of help getting to and through that final step, the “A Pirate’s Life Tall Tale Guide,” can lend you a helping hook.
We also recommend starting this commendation sequence with ‘A Powerful Thirst.’ However, if you’d like to start here that’s fine, too.
Just be sure to do (1) ‘A Powerful Thirst,’ (2) ‘Raising the Dead,’ and (3) ‘Treasure for the Dead,’ before ‘Ship of Thieves.’
Should the Cursed Captain tag along?
That depends. You’ll need at least one set of hands free to complete this commendation.
So, if you’re wandering Sailor’s Grave all by yourself, then you’ll likely want to continue solo.
If you’re wandering Sailor’s Grave as a crew, then one of you can carry the Captain, if you like.
Step 1: Find the Captain's Cabin above the Tavern
Whether you’ve completed ‘A Powerful Thirst’ or not, we know you’ve at least rescued the Cursed Captain. So, that means you’ve already been to the tavern.
Head back to the tavern. Head back to where you found the pulley to bring down the chandelier. Now, just climb up one level higher.
On that third level, you’ll see the Captain’s Cabin.
Step 2: Light your Path
Enter the cabin and approach the Captain’s desk. You should see a candle and the prompt, “Equip Lantern to light Candle.”
Once you light the candle, you’ll see three ghostly figures appear, hovering over a map.
The figure in the center is pointing a dagger to a red X. That is your next destination.
Step 3: Find that 'X'
Using the locations of the map’s few prominent landmarks, we can make our way over to that X.
In the image below, we’ve added our own markings to the map, showing you a few helpful points.
Exit the tavern the way you came in, and you should be on a dirt path, leading back to the Captain’s Cage.
Once you get to the Captain’s Cage, turn left and continue along the path.
You’ll come to a fork in the road. If you were to turn left at the fork, you would head toward the lighthouse and the docks. Instead, you want to turn right.
If you haven’t already, you should see a shipwreck ahead of you with red sails.
That is the Cursed Captain’s ship, called the Golden Hare. You’ll return to that ship later in the Tall Tale. For now, keep to the path as it continues curving around to the right.
Step 4: Investigate the Scene
As you reach the end of the path, you’ll see a large mound of dirt surrounded by two large piles of coins.
It seems someone already unearthed this treasure. Hmm… and it seems that they fled the scene in a hurry, leaving behind a trail of coins.
Step 4: Follow the Gold Coins.
Standing so that you’re facing the ship with red sails, follow the coins down a gentle slope to the left.
Turning the corner, you’ll see where the culprit must have climbed up a ladder. You won’t be able to reach that ladder, but there is another way up.
Use the fallen mast and climb to the shipwreck above.
Peering into the Captain’s Cabin, you’ll see piles of glittering gold! Unfortunately, it seems there is no way to get inside.
Perhaps the culprit could not get inside either because there is a trail of gold leading away from the cabin.
Follow the trail of coins over the rocky ledge, toward the Golden Hare, down onto the dirt path.
You’ll continue to see stray coins as you walk back along the path, but there will be little stretches where you lose the trail.
Just veer a little more to the right so you head toward the docks—rather than going back to the tavern.
Eventually the coins should lead you to a little hideout under the docks.
Step 6: Dig up the Dead
Underneath the dock, you will find a pile of gold, a shovel, an opened chest, and a pile of dug up dirt.
Dig where that pile of dirt is—right next to the shovel.
Digging at this spot will reveal the body of Poor Dougie.
Congratulations! You've Completed the Commendation: Raising the Dead.
Well done, me hearties! You’ve discovered Dougie, the buried pirate! Shortly after driving your shovel into the dirt, you should see yourself rewarded with the commendation ‘Raising the Dead.’
If you’re considering completing the remaining commendations at a later date, remember:
These commendations build on each other.
So, if you would like to complete the remaining commendations in another session, then—in that next session—you must first come to this spot and dig up Poor Dougie once more.
Perhaps you’ve already seen the reason why. There’s a lantern next to Poor Dougie. Lighting that lantern will be your first step in the next commendation: ‘Treasure for the Dead.’
