So, you’re interested in earning the commendation ‘A Powerful Thirst’?
This commendation appears in the first Tall Tale: A Pirate’s Life. More importantly, it appears in a manner unlike any Tall Tale commendations we’ve ever encountered!
Unlike most Tall Tale commendations, ‘A Powerful Thirst’ belongs to a set of six commendations that must be completed sequentially in one grand adventure! The set includes the following commendations, in this order:
- A Powerful Thirst
- Raising the Dead
- Treasure for the Dead
- Ship of Thieves
- Secret of the Grave
- The Crew of the Headless Monkey
Technically, you could do ‘A Powerful Thirst’ after ‘Raising the Dead’ and ‘Treasure for the Dead.’ However, you’ll need to do all three before doing ‘Ship of Thieves,’ savvy?
The Starting Point for 'A Powerful Thirst'
First, we should probably make sure you’ve gotten yourself to the correct spot in your Tall Tale journey.
Aye, before embarking upon this commendation adventure you must complete several steps. These steps are listed in the “A Pirate’s Life Tall Tale Guide,” thusly:
- Vote for the Tall Tale.
- Sail through the Mythical Portal.
- Sail through the Tunnel of the Damned.
- Dock your ship.
- Find the cliff’s entrance.
- Navigate “Dead Man’s Grotto.”
- Enter Sailor’s Grave.
- Find and Rescue the Cursed Captain.
If you’d like a bit of assistance completing any of those steps, the “A Pirate’s Life Tall Tale Guide,” will provide you with everything you need!
If you’ve successfully completed everything on that list. You’re ready to begin!
The Cursed Captain—to bring or not to bring?
Aye, that is the question!
You won’t need to bring the Cursed Captain along at this point.
So, if you are as Jack would say, “all by your onesies,” then you’ll likely want to leave the Cursed Captain behind for now.
You’ll need your hands free to carry your discoveries. So, bringing the Cursed Captain would mean you’d need to retrace your steps to move the item and then move the Cursed Captain.
You’ll only need one pair of hands though. So, if you’re adventuring as a crew, one of you can certainly bring the Cursed Captain along to enjoy his fine company.
Step 1: Get back to that First Pulley.
Remember when you were rescuing the Cursed Captain? You crossed the halved shipwreck, jumped down a hole in the bow, swam through a tunnel, and when you emerged you found a pulley.
You need to get back to that pulley.
You could use the same route you did before, but there is a quicker way.
Standing at the Cursed Captain’s cage, pull out your compass, and face north-by-northwest.
You’ll see two green torches alongside an opening under some scaffolding. Follow the path under that scaffolding.
It will wind a little left, then wind right, and when you emerge you’ll see the water you swam through before and the pulley on your left!
Step 2: Use that Pulley.
Aye, just like before, hoist yourself up to the scaffolding above.
Step 3: Jump to the next Scaffold.
If there’s been no skullduggery among the crew, the crates you raised to rescue the Cursed Captain should still be raised. In that case, you can simply jump to those crates and jump onto the next scaffold.
If the crates have been lowered for whatever reason, simply use the pulley to your right to raise them up again.
Step 4: Jump to a Cave Opening.
The last time you crossed these suspended platforms, your destination was the shipwreck—on whose bowsprit the Cursed Captain swung.
This time you’ll be crossing those suspended platforms to get to a cave. Look across the way to that shipwreck, then look over to the right. You’ll likely see a flickering flame peeking out from a tunnel. That’s your new destination.
Depending on how you positioned the platforms the first time, you might need to reposition them this time around.
Remember the pulley controlling them is up on that little landing off to your right.
You’ll want to position the platforms so that they are staggered.
Position the left platform close enough to the scaffolding for your first jump, but also still close enough to the right platform to make your second jump.
You’ll want the right platform to be very near the shipwreck on the other side. That way you’ll also be in jumping range of a little tunnel off to the right.
Once you have the suspended platforms in place, jump across!
Step 5: Find and Pick Up Captain Bones' Special Recipe
This tunnel leads to a cave locked up like a brig. It seems someone wanted to protect their collection of rum bottles.
Among these bottles you should see a bright glint and the prompt, “Pick Up Captain Bones’ Special Recipe.”
Pick up that bottle.
Happily, the door only seems to be locked from the outside. So, you can walk right out.
Step 6: Find the Gambling Den
Exiting that rum stash, you’re now standing on the shipwreck’s deck. From here, you can see the tavern.
Of course, the tavern might not take too kindly to you bringing in your own beverage. Ah, but the tavern is not the only place pirates might enjoy a drink.
Off the right side of the shipwreck, you’ll find spots you can carefully jump down without taking damage. Then, make your way over to the tavern.
Once you get to the tavern’s entrance, look along the walkway as it leads away from the tavern into the lowest deck of the halved shipwreck.
There you’ll find a gambling den.
Step 7: Light the Flame to Start the Game
In the center of the room, two skeletons hover over a chess board. As you approach, you’ll see the prompt “Equip Lantern to light Candle.”
Set down your bottle, pull out your lantern, and raise it up to light that candle.
As soon as that candle lights up, the skeletons resume playing and drinking. Soon enough one skeleton runs out of drink.
Refill that skeleton’s tankard with some of Captain Bones’ Special Recipe, and see what happens.
Congratulations! You've Completed the Commendation: A Powerful Thirst.
Well done, me hearties! You filled the tankard of Captain Bones! Shortly after refilling that tankard, you should see yourself rewarded with the commendation ‘A Powerful Thirst.’
If you’re considering completing the remaining commendations at a later date, remember:
These commendations build on each other.
So, if you would like to complete the other commendations in another session, then—in that next session—you would need to first repeat these steps to fill up that skeleton’s tankard.
Aye, but you likely want to continue with this adventure! Onto the next commendation: ‘Raising the Dead.’
