The mysterious client of the Smugglers’ League has set its sights on The Devil’s Roar. In search of ancient secrets, they excavated Sanctuaries of the Banished.
These mysterious chambers hold ancient secrets and mountains of Banished Ancient Treasure. However, to open a Sanctuary of the Banished, you must first find a freshly unearthed mysterious sarcophagus. Lying inside the stone casket is a fearsome foe, an Eternal Guard, that holds the key to these sanctuaries.
Take down an Eternal Guard, plunder the Sanctuaries of the Banished, and sell the Banished Ancient treasure in The Devil’s Roar for boosted rewards!
Sanctuaries of the Banished
Using the most powerful explosive in the sea, the Black Powder Barrel, the mysterious client has unearthed three ancient structures in The Devil’s Roar.
You’ll find a locked Sanctuary of the Banished on Brimstone Rock, Cinder Islet, and Flame’s End.
If you manage to crack open one of these chambers, you’ll discover ancient knowledge and valuable Banished Ancient Treasure. Not all the treasure inside is readily available. You’ll need Ashen Keys to access locked compartments to plunder additional treasure.
Gaining access to a Sanctuary of the Banished requires you first to acquire a Sanctuary of the Banished Key. Defeating a mighty Eternal Guard will reward you with the key and allow you to access the treasure inside!

The Eternal Guard
The mysterious client has done more than blast their way into the Sanctuaries of the Banished. They also unearthed buried sarcophagi during the excavations.
These forsaken caskets contain Banished Ancients known as the Eternal Guard. Each Eternal Guard holds a Sanctuary of the Banished Key and will only relinquish it upon defeat.
You can find a sarcophagus with an Eternal Guard randomly on large islands across the Sea of Thieves. While you can find one in any region, you have a higher chance of finding a sarcophagus on a large island in The Devil’s Roar.
Once you find a sarcophagus, you must complete a ritual by lighting three flames on it. After you light the third flame, you will release the Eternal Guard.
Taking down an Eternal Guard is a challenge. You’ll need to contend with their ability to cloak, summon reinforcements, throw Hunting Spears, shoot Poison Darts, and throw Poison Bombs. While cloaked, you cannot damage an Eternal Guard.
Defeat an Eternal Guard to collect a Sanctuary of the Banished Key, open a Sanctuary of the Banished, and plunder the piles of Banished Ancient Treasure inside!
We have a detailed breakdown of its ancient abilities here if you are looking to master the fight!

The Smugglers' League
To bolster the mysterious client’s excavation efforts in The Devil’s Roar, The Smugglers’ League has set up two hideouts in the region. You’ll find Saltbones Elias on Fetcher’s Rest and Laughing Fox Lucia on Ruby’s Fall. You can deliver any Smugglers’ League treasure you acquire to either of them.
You’ll also discover Smuggler’s Messages in a Bottle that can direct you to either Devil’s Roar representative.
To ensure there is a steady supply of Black Powder Barrels in the region for more digging, the Smuggler’s Route Run has moved to The Devil’s Roar. You’ll find the route directing you between Fetcher’s Rest and Ruby’s Fall.
