The brilliant detectives who refused to be foiled by the twists and turns have finally uncovered DeMarco’s murderer! But, just because the community has solved the mystery doesn’t mean you can’t partake in the momentous occasion yourself! Every pirate can now experience the mystery’s conclusion and earn a commendation to commemorate the event: The Fallen Sea Dog!
However, unlocking the commendation is no easy feat! You will still need to put on your detective hat and visit a specific set of islands that each hides a mysterious symbol! Once you have revealed the symbols, you can then enter the mystery’s final location and witness the ending unfold!
The Fallen Sea Dog Commendation
Your first order of business is to activate five symbols hidden on rocks throughout the Sea of Thieves. Each symbol is linked to a matching symbol on a mural inside the Shrine of the Coral Tomb. Activating a symbol on an island will activate it on the mural.
Only when you have simultaneously activated all five symbols in the same server will the mural be fully energized, allowing you to open it and reach the secret chamber where you can unlock the commendation.
Activate Symbols
To reveal the symbols, you must play the ‘Ballad Of The Mer’ shanty while standing in a specific location indicated by Lesedi’s Spyglass. As you play, the symbols will slowly appear on a nearby rock until they brightly glow, fade away, and activate.
So, how do you figure out where to stand and play the shanty? Well, the community discovered hints about where to use Lesedi’s Spyglass after collectively reconstructing the vague map fragments sent to pirates’ inboxes. You see, the map fragments provided directions on where to use the spyglass and what direction to face.
Thanks to the hard work of pirates across the sea, we know exactly where we need to be to play the shanty and reveal the symbol!
The five islands you will be sailing to are:
- Ashen Reaches
- Kraken’s Fall
- Old Faithful Isle
- Wanderers Refuge
- Smugglers’ Bay
Ashen Reaches Symbol
The symbol on Ashen Reaches is on the North West side of the island by a Resource Barrel and pieces of wood. Head to the ledge with the withered tree overlooking the North West beach with Lesedi’s Spyglass. Stand where the spyglass directs you and play the ‘Ballad Of The Mer’ shanty until the symbol fully reveals itself.

Kraken's Fall Symbol
The symbol on Kraken’s Fall is near the East side of the island by Graymarrow’s altar. Stand on the platform with the large beacon facing South East with Lesedi’s Spyglass. Stand where the spyglass directs you to and play the ‘Ballad Of The Mer’ shanty until the symbol fully reveals itself.

Symbol on Kraken’s Fall
Old Faithful Isle Symbol
The symbol on Old Faithful Isle is near the middle of the island. Stand on the large arch facing South East with Lesedi’s Spyglass. Stand where the spyglass directs you to and play the ‘Ballad Of The Mer’ shanty until the symbol fully reveals itself.

Wanderer's Refuge Symbol
The symbol on Wanderer’s Refuge is near the island’s rocky tunnel on the far North East side. Stand on the North side of the large slope and face North with Lesedi’s Spyglass. Line up the spyglass to match the skull’s left eye with the tunnel entrance.
With your position found, stand where the spyglass directs you to and play the ‘Ballad Of The Mer’ shanty until the symbol fully reveals itself.

Symbol on Wanderer’s Refuge
Smugglers' Bay Symbol
The symbol on Smugglers’ Bay is on the island’s North beach. Stand on the clifftop plank facing North with Lesedi’s Spyglass. Line up the spyglass to match the skull’s left eye with the boulder near the wooden ruins.
With your position located, stand where the spyglass directs you to and play the ‘Ballad Of The Mer’ shanty until the symbol fully reveals itself.

Symbol on Smugglers’ Bay
Reveal the Murderer
After you have activated all five symbols on the same server, sail to the Shrine of the Coral Tomb. You need to do this on the same server where you activated the symbols. You can’t leave and come back or start a different server.
You’ll need to solve the lever puzzle inside the Shrine to raise the water level to reach the activated mural. If you need help solving the puzzle, check out our dedicated Shrine of the Coral Tomb guide here.
Once you have raised the water level, you’ll be able to reach the activated mural. Approach the mural, and the mural will lift away, revealing a hidden chamber. Enter the chamber, and it will fill with water. You’ll need to solve another puzzle to drain the chamber and unlock the commendation.
There is no way to regain oxygen in the chamber, so you’ll need to solve the puzzle before you drown! You need to be quick as you will drown much faster here than in open water.
To solve the puzzle, you’ll need to interact with the colored coral levers in the correct order.
The order is:
- Blue
- Pink
- Orange
- Yellow
Once you complete the puzzle, the water level will lower and you will be able to exit the chamber. Follow exit until you reach a small room where the climax of the mystery will take place. After the showdown happens, you will unlock the commendation!

Does this still work if you get server merged since if you leave the server it won’t do it?
We haven’t heard otherwise. It seems as though the symbol activations get carried over.
I’ve been trying to do this since the 13th.
But nothing is working.
I have the lantern and lesedi’s spyglass
and yet nothing seems to load when attempting to activate the symbols
Hmm, that’s odd. And you try playing the shanty for a while right? It can take like 5-10 seconds for it to trigger. What islands have you tried?
It works ! Tried this today and all murals activated in islands – i was in shrine and my internet disconnected so 1 hour of sailing lost 😭
dont work anymore… even if you have all the symbols the doors wont open
I have tried it twice this week. it does not work for me either. The mural just does not open.
i tried 4 times and the door won’t open
its working now
Did this today (11th April 2024) and completed it. The sigils and the door to the final room take a while to work. Just a little patience (10 Sec.) is needed.
