There is a lot to think about when choosing your loadout weapons. If you decide to set sail with two firearms, you might be in a difficult situation without any ammo. And if you choose to fight with a Cutlass, you could be at a disadvantage with distance between you and your opponent.
The Throwing Knife is the best of both worlds, as it can be wielded like a small sword and thrown for ranged attacks!
Throwing Knives
The Throwing Knives are a unique loadout weapon that allows you to stab enemies with two different melee attacks or throw for a ranged attack. Each attack deals different damage, with the heavy melee attack causing the most damage. While the Throwing Knife is similar to the Cutlass, it’s important to remember that it cannot block attacks like the Cutlass can.
The Throwing Knife comes in a set of five. However, you can only wield one at a time.
While holding a Throwing Knife, you can quickly stab enemies, charge for a heavy downward blow, or throw it. When you throw a Throwing Knife, you’ll use one of your five and instantly replace it with another until your Knife Pouch is empty.
However, if you miss one of your throws, the Throwing Knife will stick to the surface you threw it into, and you or another pirate can pick it up. Unlike the other loadout weapons in the Sea of Thieves, you can retrieve any Throwing Knives you’ve thrown to refill your ammo.
A Throwing Knife stuck into a surface will glint at a distance, making them easy to spot and retrieve.
How do you get Throwing Knives?
Like the Blunderbuss, Cutlass, Eye of Reach, and Flintlock, you can equip it as one of your two loadout choices at the Armory on your ship. You don’t need to purchase or find it on the sea. However, you can also pick up Throwing Knives thrown by other pirates, even if you don’t have Throwing Knives equipped.
When you don’t have Throwing Knives equipped and pick up a Throwing Knife, you’ll interact with it like an item you can pick up and drop, similar to a Trident of Dark Tides. It will not replace one of your loadout weapons or give you an additional loadout weapon.
However, you must either throw it or drop it. You can’t use the Throwing Knife to stab, heavy downward blow, or store for later.
You can also restock its ammo using any Ammo Crate, Armoury, and Ammo Pouch.
How many Throwing Knives can you hold at once?
You can hold up to five Throwing Knives in your Knife Pouch.
Throwing Knife Attacks
The Throwing Knife has three different methods of attack: quick stab, heavy downward blow, and throw.
Quick Stab
The quick stab attack allows you to quickly stab enemies directly in front of you. This attack is very fast but has low damage and short range. The quick stab attack also does lower damage than the Cutlass slash. Currently the Quick Stab does 14 damage.
Press the Right Trigger or Left Mouse Button to use the quick stab attack.
Heavy Downward Blow
The heavy downward blow attack allows you to perform a heavy stab that deals more damage than the quick stab and the throw. It also does more damage than the Cutlass lunge but doesn’t have the range and has slower movement. Currently the Heavy Downward Blow does 70 damage.
Hold the Right Trigger or Left Mouse Button to raise your Throwing Knife, and release the Right Trigger or Left Mouse Button when you are ready to stab it downwards. While holding down the Right Trigger or Left Mouse Button, you will walk slower than usual in a stealthy stance, making this attack challenging to pull off if you are actively in a fight.
Throw
The throw attack allows you to throw one of your Throwing Knifes at an enemy from a distance.
To throw a Throwing Knife, you must first hold the Left Trigger or Right Mouse Button to aim as if you were aiming down the sights of a firearm. Then, when you are to throw, you can release the Left Trigger or Right Mouse Button.
A thrown knife causes the second most damage of the three attacks, after the heavy downward blow, and has the advantage of being ranged. However, you’ll need skill and precision to hit your target successfully and lose one of your knives in the process. Currently, the Throw does 60 damage.
While opponents wielding firearms can’t do much about your thrown knife, pirates using a Cutlass can block all three knife attacks, including a thrown knife.
