Pirates who hope to rule the sea must be tactical about what they fire out of their cannons and when. Knowing the perfect time to fire a Chainshot or light a rival crew’s ship ablaze with a Firebomb can be crucial to winning a fight. You’ll need to use the same naval instinct when firing the Scattershot: a close-range cannonball that can deal a wide spread of damage!
Scattershot
The Scattershot is a group of four small Cannonballs that break apart when fired, dealing a wide spread of damage. Each Cannonball from the Scattershot deals less damage than a normal Cannonball. Specifically, each small Cannonball will make one small Tier 1 hole. While each Cannonball does less damage, it does create more holes, meaning more time and Wooden Planks spent repairing.
The Scattershot’s range is less than a regular Cannonball’s, making it most effective for short-range naval combat. It also has a broader spread compared to a regular Cannonball. The Scattershot spreads in a horizontal oval shape, giving it a wider spread compared to the straighter Cannonball.
Scattershots not only create holes in a ship, but they can also damage the ship’s Wheel, Mast, and Capstan like regular Cannonballs.
Scattershot can also damage pirates and other enemies, similarly to regular Cannonballs, but does not cause knockback.
Where can you find Scattershot?
You can find Scattershot in your ship’s Cannonball Barrels. Like Chainshot, Firebombs, and Blunderbombs, your vessel comes stocked with a couple.
You can also find Scattershot in Resource Barrels, Cannonball Barrels, Storage Crates, and Cannon Rowboats around the world. They have the same chance of appearing as Chainshot.
Scattershot Damage
The Scattershot deals less damage than a regular Cannonball. It will create a small Tier 1 hole that lets a small amount of water into the ship. You cannot use the Scattershot to make a large Tier 3 hole, even if you hit the same spot multiple times. The hole size a Scattershot can create is capped at a medium-sized Tier 2 hole. You can only create large Tier 3 holes with a regular Cannonball.

How does the scattershot damage work against ghost ships? I saw some people saying that they only count as one cannonball, others saying that they count as three and can one-shot ghost ships, and a few saying that the scattershot balls only register as separate if the don’t all hit at the same time. What is the truth?
You can’t 1 shot a ghost ship.
