Keeping evil forces at bay is a hard day’s work. The pirates of the Sea of Thieves have been particularly busy as of late, not only repelling the advances of Graymarrow and Flameheart but also the infamous Davy Jones! Unfortunately, with so much work to be done, there’s hardly been time to blow off some steam.

Not to worry! Larinna and the Bilge Rats have just the remedy! They have organized an event that will have you leaving all that serious business at the tavern door to focus on the funny business. The Making Mayhem event will be a chance for pirates to take part in some crazy shenanigans where the only consequence might be a quick trip to the Ferry of the Damned!

Not only will you be blowing things up and lighting stuff on fire, but you will also be unlocking pieces of the brand new Mayhem Ship collection! Cause enough chaos, and you will unlock the entire set!

Mayhem Ship Set

What is the Making Mayhem Event?

The Making Mayhem event is comprised of twelve repeatable challenges.

During the event, the Bilge Rats will be keeping track of the Favour you earn every time you complete one of the repeatable Challenges—like a point system.

Once you have met certain point thresholds, the Bilge Rats will reward you with unique Borderlands-inspired cosmetics!

The curated list of twelve Challenges that will reward Favour upon completion ranges from blowing up a shark with a Gunpowder Barrel to collecting all the gold in a Treasure Vault!

Although you’ll need to complete Challenges to acquire Favour points, there is no requirement that you complete all of the Challenges or complete any particular Challenge.

Even better, the Challenges are repeatable. So, you can choose to complete whichever Challenges you prefer, as many times as you like, to collect Favour.

You can view each of the Challenges in-game via the Special Events menu. You can see your Favour progress here as well.

How long is the Making Mayhem Event?

The Making Mayhem Event will run from August 24th to September 7th.

What are the Making Mayhem rewards?

Completing the repeatable Challenges will reward players with ship cosmetics from the Borderlands Mayhem Ship Collection.

Earn 10 Favour to unlock the Mayhem Flag.

Earning 20 Favour will unlock the Mayhem Hull.

If you manage to earn 30 Favour, you will unlock the Mayhem Figurehead.

Earn 40 Favour to unlock the Mayhem Sails.

Earning 50 Favour will unlock the Mayhem Capstan.

Reach 80 Favour will unlock the Mayhem Wheel.

Finally, earning 100 Favour will unlock the Mayhem Cannons!

What are the Making Mayhem Challenges?

There are a total of twelve Challenges that reward Favour upon completion. Some of the Challenges are crew-based while others will require just you to complete the feat!

Earn 5 Favour by...

Exploding Gunpowder Skeletons in a chain reaction.

Gunpowder Skeletons are skeletons that spawn holding a Gunpowder Barrel in their hands. They will run towards any pirate in their vicinity and set off the Gunpowder Barrel they are holding when close enough.

For this Challenge, you’ll want to gather at least two Gunpowder Skeletons together. Once you have a grouping, shoot one of the Gunpowder Barrels that one of the skeletons is holding. Hopefully, it will detonate the other Gunpowder Barrel the second skeleton is holding to achieve a chain reaction. Anyone in your crew can shoot the Gunpowder Skeleton for the entire crew to get Favour.

You need to make sure that you or someone in your crew is the one to set off the Gunpowder Barrel. If the skeleton holding the Gunpowder Barrel sets off the Gunpowder Barrel on its own, you won’t get credit for the skeleton kills.

This Challenge is crew-based, so as long as anyone from your crew is the one to trigger the Gunpowder Barrel skeleton, you will receive Favour.

Gunpowder Skeleton

Earn 5 Favour by...

Defeating a group of skeletons by detonating a Gunpowder Skeleton.

For this Challenge, you’ll want to gather several skeletons around a Gunpowder Skeleton and shoot the Gunpowder barrel to kill all the surrounding skeletons. Anyone in your crew can shoot the Gunpowder Skeleton for the entire crew to get credit.

Earn 5 Favour by...

Burning a group of skeletons at once using a firebomb or a Chest of Rage.

To complete this challenge, you will need to burn three skeletons at once using a firebomb or Chest of Rage.

The easiest way to do this is with a Firebomb. Round up any three skeletons, regardless of type, and throw a single Firebomb in the center of them. If all three light ablaze, you will have completed this Challenge.

Firebombs can be found randomly in Resource Barrels across the Sea of Thieves. You can easily find several while plundering the Outpost at the start of your session.

As for finding three skeletons, you can find them emergently while exploring islands or vote on Order of Souls Bounty Voyage. While completing the Bounty Voyage, you will encounter several waves of skeletons in groups of three or more. You should have no problem bunching three to throw a Firebomb at to complete this Challenge.

This is a crew-based Challenge so as long as someone from your crew is the one to light the skeletons, you will receive Favour.

Firebomb

Earn 5 Favour by...

Defeating a shark using a Gunpowder Barrel.

To complete this Challenge, you simply need to kill a shark using a Gunpowder Barrel. It’s okay if you die with the explosion, just as long as you take the shark with you!

This is not a crew-based Challenge so you’ll have to find and kill a shark on your own to receive credit.

Where to find Gunpowder Barrels

Gunpowder Barrels can be found randomly across the Sea of Thieves. They can be found washed up on the beaches of islands, in Barrels of Plenty floating in the water or even in shipwrecks.

Though, one almost guaranteed place to find Gunpowder Barrels is at inactive forts. Sail to any inactive fort nearby and you are bound to find several Gunpowder Barrels just waiting to be taken.

Where to find Sharks

Sharks spawn emergently in the Sea of Thieves. If you just jump into the water and wait a little while, you are sure to have one or two spawn nearby. Though, you will also have to contend with any sirens who wish to ambush you now as well.

If you are having trouble having a shark spawn near you, you can always head to the closest shipwreck. Both sharks and sirens are more likely to spawn at shipwrecks so you will definitely find one to use your Gunpowder Barrel on.

Earn 1 Favour by...

Hitting a ship with a chaos-inducing Ghostly Cannonball, chainshot or a firebomb shot from a cannon.

Use your cannons to fire a Ghostly Cannonball, Chainshot, or Firebomb at any ship to receive Favour. Hitting an enemy crew’s ship or a Skeleton Ship will both count for this Challenge.

As soon as you arrive in the Sea of Thieves, you will want to scour the Outpost for supplies. You will most likely find several Chainshot and Firebombs inside the Resource Barrels scattered around the island. Additionally, several Chainshot and Firebombs spawn on your ship just waiting for you to use.

Scan the horizon for a Skeleton Ship or another player ship and sail on over. Then, empty all your special Cannonballs onto the ship to receive Favour for each successful hit!

Max Chain Shot

Earn 1 Favour by...

Destroying a Ghost Ship.

Ghost Ships can be found during an Order of Souls Ghost Ship voyage or during the Burning Blade World Event. Defeating Ghost Ships from either will count and award Favour.

To find Ghost Ships during a voyage, speak to an Order of Souls representative at any Outpost. Purchase the Ghost Ship voyage from the representative and vote on the voyage at your ship’s voyage table. You will receive a quest that will tell you which island the Ghost Ships are haunting. Sail there, destroy some Ghost Ships and rack up some Favour!

To find Ghost Ships during the Burning Blade World Event, keep an eye out for the giant Flameheart cloud in the sky. Underneath this cloud will be dozens of Ghost Ships just waiting to be sent back to the Sea of the Damned!

Ghost Ships

Earn 10 Favour by...

Handing in a Stronghold Gunpowder Barrel or Keg of Ancient Black Powder.

Stronghold Gunpowder Barrels can be found randomly in shipwrecks across the Sea of Thieves and inside Fort Vaults. Handing one in to either the Gold Hoarders or Reapers Bones will reward you with Favour.

Earn 10 Favour by...

Opening one of the Gold Hoarders’ Treasure Vaults.

To open a Treasure Vault you must first acquire a Treasure Vault Key. Vault Keys can be found at the end of Wayfinder Voyages sold by the Gold Hoarders. You can only purchase these voyages from the Gold Hoarders if you have a reputation of 25 or higher with their Trading Company. If you don’t have a high enough reputation level, you are in luck! For the duration of the Vault Raiders Event, Larinna will be selling a Wayfinder Voyage to any pirate looking to take on the challenge.

If the Golden Wayfinder compass has you stumped, you can always learn more about it and the Wayfinder Voyage from our Golden Wayfinder Voyage guide here!

Opening a Treasure Vault is also a crew-based Challenge. It doesn’t matter who in your crew places the Vault Key in the lock, the entire crew will earn Favour.

Treasure Vaults

Earn 10 Favour by...

Setting a Skeleton Ship ablaze using an Ashen Winds Skull.

Ashen Winds Skulls are one of the many tools found in the Sea of Thieves. This tool in particular acts as a flamethrower that can set skeletons, pirates and ships ablaze. You can find one in the loot awarded after completing an Ashen Lord World Event.

With this powerful tool in hand, it’s now time to hunt down a Skeleton Ship. You can sail towards an active Skeleton Ship World Event for guaranteed Skeleton Ships to battle or find an emergent Skeleton Ship roaming the sea. Once you have one in sight, sail towards it with your Ashen Winds Skull and board it!

Once aboard, you’ll want to start lighting the ship on fire by activating the Ashen Winds Skull. You can use the Ashen Winds Skull like you would a handheld weapon by pressing Right Trigger or Left Click. Fire will come out of the skull’s mouth for as long as you hold down the button until the skull runs out of fuel.

Focusing the flame that comes out of the skull’s mouth on the mast, capstan, or wheel of the Skeleton Ship will quickly set the ship on fire.

As soon as you light the ship, you will have completed the Challenge and be awarded with Favour! Anyone in your crew can pull off this mighty task and it will count for the entire crew.

Earn 15 Favour by...

Drinking or playing music with another crew at an Outpost.

To complete this Challenge, you’ll need to drink from your tankard at the same time another crew drinks from theirs, or play your instrument at the same time another crew plays theirs, while at an Outpost.

This is not a crew-based Challenge so make sure you have a tankard full of grog or instrument ready to go!

As long as one person from another crew drinks from their tankard while you drink from yours, or you are playing instruments at the same time, you will complete this Challenge. You do not need to be in an Alliance with the other crew to get credit.

If you can’t find any friends at sea, your best bet might be to sail around to each Outpost, looking for another crew who is already there. Hop off and raise your tankard to show your friendly intentions! You can also try serenading them with a peaceful shanty!

Earn 15 Favour by...

Collecting all the gold piles inside one of the Gold Hoarders’ Treasure Vaults.

Gold Piles are littered across the floor and platforms inside every Treasure Vault. You must hold down your Interact button over the Gold Pile to collect it. The gold will immediately go into your gold pouch, so there is no need to worry about carrying it out of the Treasure Vault.

To complete this Challenge, you and your crew will have to pick up every Gold Pile in the Treasure Vault before you can no longer access the Treasure Vault. This means that you can still collect Gold Piles even after the Treasure Vault Door has shut and the room fills with water. With your last gasping breaths, it is worth your time to grab any remaining Gold Piles just in case you can get the job done before you leave for the Ferry of the Damned!

This Challenge is also crew-based. As soon as anyone in the crew picks up the last Gold Pile, everyone will receive Favour.

Finishing any Tall Tale (visit the Castaway or Mysterious Stranger to get started).

Completing any one of the Tall Tales will complete this Challenge. You can choose a Tall Tale from the Shores of Gold set, one of two Ashen Tall Tales, or one of the A Pirate’s Life Tall Tales.

If you need help completing whatever Tall Tale you choose, you can always use one of our handy guides found here! We have step-by-step instructions that will help you solve any puzzle or fight you come across.

A Pirate's Life

What Challenges should you do?

The set of Challenges cover a wide range of gameplay styles, so you are bound to unlock Favour as you go about your adventures on the Sea of Thieves.

UPDATE: Several of the Challenges starting August 26th have had their Favour distribution reduced. Due to this, we have a new suggested strategy to unlock the new Mayhem Ship Set.

Post August 26th

If you want to focus on completing the event, we suggest grabbing some Firebombs and starting an Order of Souls Bounty Voyage.

For will earn 5 Favour for every group of three skeletons you light on fire. You are guaranteed to find multiple groupings of three skeletons while completing an Order of Souls Bounty Voyage. Depending on how many waves it takes to complete one of the Quests, you could rack up 50 Favour in one go if you collected enough Firebombs.

You also have an opportunity to complete the Gunpowder Skeleton Challenges during the Order of Souls Bounty Voyage, which also rewards 5 Favour each.

Pre August 26th

If you want to focus on completing the event, we suggest defeating Ghost Ships during a Ghost Ship voyage or Burning Blade World Event. You only need to defeat 20 Ghost Ships to reach 100 Favour which you can quickly do by completing either the Ghost Ship voyage or World Event.

To build off the Ghost Ship strategy, if you have access to the Lords of the Sea Tall Tale, you will want to complete that. You will fight dozens of Ghost Ships along the way and receive 20 Favour for completing the Tall Tale!

You will also find yourself earning lots of Favour quickly by laying waste into an unsuspecting Skeleton Ship with Chainshot and Firebombs. Your ship comes stocked with several of each making it easy to gather enough to earn a hefty amount of Favour this way.
