Don’t be surprised to find a few stowaways the next time you set sail! Rats have made their way to the Sea of Thieves and have made homes aboard the pirate ships that roam the sea.
You will now randomly see rats on the bottom deck of your ship as they scurry between hiding spots. Rats not only add more life and another level of immersion to your sailing experience, but they also provide helpful information that could save your ship!
Rats dislike water very much and will hang out where it’s driest. As your ship fills with water, the rats will scamper from the bottom to the top deck. So if you see rats on top of your deck, you better run below with a bucket in hand! You will find a shipload of water waiting for you to bail!
Are Rats Pets?
No, rats are not a new type of Pet. You cannot purchase them, and you cannot equip them from the Pet Chest.
You also cannot interact with the rats the same way you can with Pets. So don’t expect to pet them or pick them up to shoot out of a cannon.
Rats exist to live their life and let you know when your ship is sinking.

Can you disable the Rats?
Yes, it is possible to disable the rats. Disabling the rats will make it so you no longer have to see them on your ship.
To turn the rats off, open up the Game Options menu and go to Settings.
Once you are in Settings, scroll down to Graphics Settings, and you will see the option to “Disable Rats on your ship.” Turn that option “On,” and you will no longer see rats on your ship.
