One of the many commendations you can complete while you hunt for ancient secrets in The Devil’s Roar is the ‘Boom of the Banished’ commendation.

If you are just looking to complete ‘Boom of the Banished’, you’ll first need to get your hands on a Black Powder Barrel!
Boom of the Banished
To complete the Boom of the Banished Commendation, you must damage an Eternal Guard with a Black Powder Barrel. While cloaked, the Eternal Guard is invulnerable to all attacks. So, you’ll need to detonate your Black Powder Barrel during one of the quick moments where the Eternal Guard is not cloaked.
Black Powder Barrel
Before finding an Eternal Guard, you’ll want to get a Black Powder Barrel. You can find Black Powder Barrels randomly in Smugglers’ Caches, Smugglers’ Shipwrecks, and Smuggling Skeleton Ships. You can also find them from the Smugglers’ Route Run Voyage and Smugglers’ Messages in Bottles.
During Season 18, you can dive to a Smugglers’ Route Run Voyage to The Devil’s Roar, speeding up the process of acquiring a Black Powder Barrel and finding an Eternal Guard.
Eternal Guard
Once you have a Black Powder Barrel and are fighting an Eternal Guard, you’ll have to wait for the Eternal Guard to reveal itself and damage it with the Black Powder Barrel.
The Black Powder Barrel’s fuse lasts about 10 seconds. So, once the Eternal Guard cloaks itself, wait about three seconds and ignite the Black Powder Barrel.
Follow the Eternal Guard’s trail of purple smoke and wait for it to show itself. If you are not close enough to the Eternal Guard when it uncloaks, or the Eternal Guard cloaks again before your Black Powder Barrel will explode, defuse the Black Powder Barrel by pressing Left Trigger or Right Mouse Button and try again.
One of your best opportunities is when the Eternal Guard attempts to summon reinforcements. That ability takes the longest for the Eternal Guard to complete. When you see it pounding its spear against the ground, you know you have enough time to detonate the Black Powder Barrel.
