It’s time to ring in the New Year by celebrating the only way a true pirate knows how, with grog! The annual Grogmanay event is back again with more cosmetics to unlock, Fireworks to shoot, and of course, grog to drink!

The Challenges and rewards for this event will look familiar to those who have participated in previous Grogmanays. However, the real prize is earning another notch on your Grogmanay Annual Tankard! If this is your first Grogmanay, you’ll receive your first Grogmanay Annual Tankard, so you’ll be ready to earn a notch next year!

What is the Grogmanay Event?

The Grogmanay Event contains six Challenges for your crew to complete. Each one requires your pirate to be drunk while performing the actions necessary to complete the Challenge. To officially be drunk in the Sea of Thieves, you must quickly drink three tankards of grog back to back.

If your vision is blurry, you hear ringing in your ears, and you are uncontrollably hiccuping, burping, and throwing up, you’ll know you are the proper amount of drunk.

These Challenges are not repeatable like some Challenges in other events, so you only need to complete the Challenge’s requirements once. You also work on the Challenges over several sailing sessions.

You’ll only need to complete four of the six Challenges to earn every possible reward the event offers, so choose the Challenges that cater to your playstyle!

How to Upgrade Your Tankard

One of the cosmetics you can earn during this year’s Grogmanay event is the Grogmanay Annual Tankard! This Grogmanay Annual Tankard is one of the more unique cosmetics in the Sea of Thieves, as the Tankard is upgradable!

Each year during Grogmanay, you will have the opportunity to upgrade your Tankard, which will change its appearance. For each Grogmany you participate in, you will add a notch on the side of your Tankard.

If this is your first Grogmanay, you’ll earn a Tankard with one notch. If this is your second or third Grogmanay, you’ll add another notch to your Tankard.

With the notches visible on the side of your Tankard, you can show off how many Grogmanay events you’ve celebrated.

What are the Grogmanay rewards?

Participating in this year’s Grogmanay event will earn you several festive rewards!

If you complete one Grogmanay Challenge, you will earn the Grogmanay Event Flag.

If you complete two Gromanay Challenges, you will earn the Bilge Rat Celebration Firework.

If you complete four Gromanay Challenges, you will earn the Grogmanay Annual Tankard.

How long is the Grogmanay Event?

The Grogmanay event runs from December 30th to January 2nd.

Grogmanay Challenges

To complete the Challenges in this event, you’ll need to be three grogs deep, wait until the inevitable effects take hold, and then use that brief time to tackle Challenge before the grog wears off!

Wait until your pirate has started to throw up before performing the Challenge requirements! You’ll also want to stay clear of deep water until you are entirely sickly drunk. Being fully submerged in water will sober your pirate up if you haven’t drained all three tankards of grog.

You can always check your progress on the Challenges from the Season Eight Events section under your Pirate Log.

A Staggering Success

Drink three tankards of grog, then dig up treasure chests while you’re still sick. Keep the grow flowing to succeed.

To complete this Challenge, you must dig up two Gold Hoarder chests while your pirate is drunk. Gold Hoarder chests include Captain’s, Marauder’s, Seafarer’s, and Castaway’s Chests.

As you only have so much time before your pirate sobers up, you’ll want to ensure your dig site is close to your grog source. Of course, those without a Chest of a Thousand Grogs will use the Grog Barrel on their ship. If that is the case, a small island with easy-to-reach Xs on the beach will be ideal.

Purchase and vote on Gold Hoarder voyages until you find a quest with a small island. Then, sail to that island, drink three grogs back to back, and dig up that treasure.

After digging up two chests, you will have completed the Challenge.

Dropping the Ball

Drink three tankards of grog, then hit an enemy ship with cannonballs while you’re still sick. Keep the grog flowing to succeed!

To complete this Challenge, you must hit an enemy ship one time with a cannonball while drunk. Both player-crewed ships and Skeleton Ships count for this Challenge.

So, to start working on this Challenge, you’ll need to find yourself a ship! You can use your Hourglass of Fate to find a player-crewed ship or sail the open sea in Adventure to find a Skeleton Ship.

Once you have found an enemy ship, grab some cannonballs from your Cannonball Barrel and run down below deck to your Grog Barrel. Quickly drink three tankards of grog and then run back up to your ship’s cannons. Once the grog has blurred your vision, and you have started to vomit, fire away at the enemy ship!

If you can hit the ship at least once, you will have completed the Challenge.

Drowned Sorrows

Drink three tankards of grog, then defeat Ocean Crawlers while you’re still sick. Keep the grog flowing to succeed!

To complete this Challenge, you’ll need to kill three Ocean Crawlers while your pirate is drunk.

Ocean Crawlers can be found randomly on islands as you roam the sea. As you go about your adventures, be on the lookout for any Ocean Crawlers on the beach of any islands you pass.

When you have found some Ocean Crawlers to kill, quickly drink three tankards of grog and begin your battle. Killing any of the three different Ocean Crawlers while your pirate is throwing up will give you credit towards the Challenge.

Sick Burn

Drink three tankards of grog, then defeat skeletons using firebombs while you’re still sick. Keep the grog flowing to succeed!

To complete this Challenge, you’ll need to kill ten skeletons with Firebombs while drunk.

You’ll first want to get your hands on some Firebombs. Firebombs can be found randomly in Resource Barrels throughout the Sea of Thieves. If you own a Captained ship, you could also quickly purchase some Firebombs from the Shipwright!

If you can’t find any Firebombs, don’t worry! Your ship also comes stocked with several in your Cannonball Barrel.

Once you have some Firebombs, it’s time to hunt for skeletons. Of course, you can always find them randomly on the islands you visit during your adventures. Although, it might be easier to find a guaranteed group of them during an Order of Souls Bounty Voyage!

Once you have a group of skeletons, lead them down to the beach, where your ship is parked. Then, quickly go to your Grog Barrel and drink three tankards back to back! As soon as you have finished your third round, head back to the skeletons. Hopefully, they haven’t wandered too far, and you can start to throw your Firebombs at them before the grog wears off.

Dinner and Drinks

Drink three tankards of grog, then capture a chicken, pig and snake while you’re still sick. Keep the grog flowing to succeed!

To complete this Challenge, you’ll need to capture a chicken, pig, and snake while drunk.

You’ll first want to acquire a Chicken Coop, Pig Crate, and Snake Basket. You can find them randomly on islands throughout the Sea of Thieves or get them by purchasing and voting on Trade Good Commission Voyages from the Merchant Alliance.

Once you have one of each kind of crate, it’s time to hunt down the animals. You can randomly find Chickens, Pigs, and Snakes on different islands as you sail the sea. Of course, you can always use your handy interactive map to see where each of the three land animals lives. You can turn on the markers for each animal in the “Filter” menu to locate the closest island where you’ll find them. Remember, you have a better chance of seeing animals on larger islands!

Once you are at the island, quickly drink three tankards of grog back to back, grab your crate, wait to throw up, and capture the animal you need!

Catch Snake Drunk

Chunder the Sea

Drink three tankards of grog, then defeat a shark while you’re still sick. Keep the grog flowing to succeed!

To complete this Challenge, you’ll need to kill one shark while drunk.

Sharks can be found randomly in open water. You can easily find one by swimming in the water for a short period. Simply being in the water should attract sharks.

If you are still struggling to find a shark, you can sail to the closest shipwreck. Sharks are more likely to appear near wrecks.

Once you have a shark in the water, hit it with your cutlass or firearm several times. Be careful not to kill it, though! Not yet! Damaging the shark will make it easier to kill it while drunk.

After doing some damage, jump on your ship and head to your Grog Barrel. Quickly drink three grogs back to back and jump in the water with your weapon ready. Once your pirate’s vision is blurry and starts to sway back and forth while throwing up, kill the shark.
