Someone has stolen a precious treasure belonging to the Pirate Lord. Essential to preventing the Sea of Thieves from falling into chaos, the treasure’s quick recovery is of the utmost importance!

With no trace of who the thief is or where they went, the Pirate Lord has devised a plan to track down and recover the treasure. However, he can’t do it alone. He needs your help for his mission to be a success!

If you are up for the Pirate Lord’s task, you’ll want to begin the A Dark Deception Adventure as soon as possible. The Pirate Lord is trusting you to get the job done!

How to complete A Dark Deception Adventure

To complete the A Dark Deception Adventure, you must follow the Pirate Lord’s orders to find his stolen treasure. After completing his orders and finding his plundered treasure, speak with the Pirate Lord to complete the Adventure and unlock Pendragon’s Pocket Watch.

To earn ‘The Deceiver and Deceived’ title, you must complete all 11 Deeds for the Adventure. You can see the 11 Deeds and your progress toward them in the Adventure Tab.

There is one Checkpoint that you will reach halfway through the Adventure, which you can resume anytime by speaking with Larinna. If you’ve unlocked a Checkpoint, you will see a CONTINUE ADVENTURE option in her dialogue choices.

The A Dark Deception Adventure will be available to all pirates from June 22nd to July 6th, 2023. Unfortunately, after July 6th, you cannot partake in the Adventure and earn the two Mementos.

A Dark Deception: Step by Step

Step 1: Start A Dark Deception Adventure

To start A Dark Deception Adventure, you must speak to Larinna at any active Outpost across the Sea of Thieves. You can find her just outside the Tavern.

Once you have found Larinna, speak with her. You’ll see several different dialogue options you can select. Choose the last option, BEGIN ADVENTURE, to learn more about a top-secret mission.

It’s important to note that you cannot start the Adventure if you are actively doing a Tall Tale. You can also cancel the Adventure if you need to via your ship’s Voyage Table like you would a voyage or Tall Tale.

You will start Chapter One of the Adventure as soon as you choose the BEGIN ADVENTURE option!

BEGIN ADVENTURE

If you want to start the Adventure but are far from an Outpost, you also can begin by talking to the Pirate Lord on the Uncharted Island at N13.

Step 2: Sail to the Uncharted Island located at N13

With the Adventure started, Larinna will give you a note directing you to sail to the Uncharted Island located at N-13. A mysterious contact is waiting to speak with you there.

Go to your ship’s Map Table and find the coordinates N-13. As the name suggests, you won’t see an island at those coordinates, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there! So place a marker on N-13 and set sail toward those coordinates!

Once you are in the coordinates N-13, look for a small shallow island with a prominent red plant. It will be the only island around.

Park your ship on the West side of the tiny island. You should see the mysterious contact, the Pirate Lord, waiting for you!

Step 3: Speak with the Pirate Lord

Speak with the Pirate Lord to find out what he wants. After he fills you in on the theft, he will give you a book with his orders and a note of permission. You can equip both from your Quest Radial anytime during the Adventure.

To start with the Pirate Lord’s plan, open the book to the first page, and you’ll find the Pirate Lord’s orders:

  • Obtain the Pocket Watch from Madame Olivia at Plunder Outpost.
  • Claim a fragment from the figurehead of the Burning Blade, found at Shipwreck Bay.
  • Instruct Madame Olive at Sanctuary Outpost to Create an Enchanted Compass.
  • Follow the compass to retrieve the treasure, then return it to me.

With your orders received, it’s time to set sail to Plunder Outpost, where you’ll find Madame Olivia and the Pocket Watch.

The Pirate Lord's Orders

Step 4: Sail to Plunder Outpost

You can find Plunder Outpost in The Ancient Isles at the map coordinates J-18. You’ll sail South West from the Uncharted Island at N13 to reach the Outpost.

Step 5: Speak with Madame Olivia

Once on the Outpost, head over to the Order of Souls tent. You’ll find Madame Olivia inside. Speak with Madame Olivia and ask if you can borrow the Pocket Watch on the table. Unfortunately, she will decline as the Pocket Watch is very dear to her.

Don’t worry, though! We can still get the watch! Open up the book the Pirate Lord gave you and flip to the second page. You’ll see that the Pirate Lord had a backup plan for retrieving the Pocket Watch!

Ask Madame Olivia

Step 6: Obtain Pendragon's Pocket Watch

Head to the back of the Tavern and find the locked door with a little hole at the bottom of it. Approach the door, and you will see a prompt to knock. Knock three times. After the third knock, a rat will dash out of the hole and run around the Tavern. Follow the rat to Madame Olivia’s tent to find the rat scampering around Madame Oliva’s feet.

Now is your chance to grab the Pocket Watch! With Madame Olivia distracted by the rat’s presence, you can approach the Pocket Watch and interact with it. As soon as you pick it up, you will add it to your Quest Radial.

With the first order complete, you can now work on the second order to claim a fragment from the figurehead of the Burning Blade!

Take Pocketwatch

Step 7: Sail to Shipwreck Bay

The Pirate Lord’s book mentions that the Burning Blade is on Shipwreck Bay. You can find Shipwreck Bay in The Wilds at the map coordinates M-10. You’ll sail North by North East from Plunder Outpost to reach the island.

Step 8: Claim a fragment from the figurehead of the Burning Blade

You’ll want to approach Shipwreck Bay from the South West side. As you get near the beach, you’ll see the shipwreck of the Burning Blade just West of the Blackwyche.

How to reach the figurehead

If you get off your ship and explore the Burning Blade, you’ll see no easy way to climb it and reach the figurehead.

While it is possible to reach the top with expert climbing skills, docking your ship next to the shipwreck, or by sword lunging off the island’s highest peak, the Pirate Lord suggests another way. As mentioned in Pirate Lord’s book, you’ll want to use your ship’s cannons to reach the top of the shipwreck and claim the fragment.

So, park your ship just West of the Burning Blade and aim your ship’s cannon to the East at the banner on top of the shipwreck.

Then, load yourself in and fire away! Hopefully, you’ll land atop the ship, where you can easily reach the figurehead.

Break off fragment

You can climb down the ladders on either side of the bow to reach the planks that lead to the figurehead or hop over the edge down onto the scaffolding.

Once you’ve made your way down to the front of the shipwreck, approach the dragon figurehead and interact with its eye to break off a fragment. No matter which side you choose first, you won’t be able to break off a piece. You’ll need to walk back along the scaffolding, climb a ladder, and go to the other side to try the other eye.

Try again on the second eye, and you’ll claim a fragment from the figurehead! You will also unlock a Checkpoint here if you need to stop and continue later.

Step 9: Search the Blackwyche

Before you leave the island, you’ll want to head to the Captain’s Cabin of the Blackwyche. There’s a rat inside behind the Captain’s Table, waiting for you to find it. Interact with the rat, and you will complete the ‘Search the Blackwyche’ Deed.

Step 10: Sail to Sanctuary Outpost

With the fragment collected, and the rat found, it’s time for your next order! Open the Pirate Lord’s book, and you’ll see that you must sail to Sanctuary Outpost to speak to Madame Olive.

You can find Sanctuary Outpost in The Shores of Plenty region at the map coordinates F-7. You’ll be heading West by North West from Shipwreck Bay to reach the Outpost.

Step 11: Create an Enchanted Compass

Once at the Outpost, head to the Order of Souls tent and speak with Madame Olive. Choose the CONTINUE ADVENTURE option to start a ritual for creating an Enchanted Compass.

Madame Olive will complete the ritual and give you the Enchanted Compass. It will automatically be in your Quest Radial.

Step 12: Search near Madame Olive

Before you leave the Outpost, walk outside the Order of Souls tent and just around the corner to the stairs that lead up to the Pirate Emporium. Just below the stairs, you’ll find a rat. Interact with the rat to complete the ‘Search near Madame Olive’ Deed.

Step 13: Sail to Port Merrick

Equip the Enchanted Compass from your Quest Radial and take note of the direction it points. Then, hop on your ship and follow the compass’s directions South. You will soon realize that the compass is leading you to Port Merrick!

Step 14: Search Port Merrick

Once on Port Merrick, equip the Enchanted Compass again and follow it. You’ll eventually find yourself inside the Tavern. Head to the side of the room with the Mysterious Stranger, and you’ll see a rat hiding under the bench with the Glitterbeard journal. Interact with the rat and follow it across the Tavern to the stairs that lead down to the cellar. Finding the rat will unlock the ‘Search Port Merrick’ Deed.

Step 15: Locate the Stolen Treasure

Keep following the Enchanted Compass down the stairs and into the underground water tunnel. The compass will lead you to the right, where you’ll find a small hole in a stone wall.

Approach the hole and interact with it. A rat will run in and out of the hole, causing the stone wall nearby to open up. Walk down into the secret area and speak with the Pirate Lord.

After the interaction between you and the Pirate Lord is over, you will complete the Adventure and unlock the Pendragon’s Pocket Watch memento!

You will unlock most of the Deeds for A Dark Deception as you work through the Adventure. However, there are several that you can completely miss if you are not careful.

The Deeds you must complete to unlock the ‘The Deceiver and Deceived’ title are:

  • Meet your Mysterious Contact
  • Speak to Madame Olivia
