One of the many commendations you can complete during The Quest for Guybrush Tall Tale is the ‘Trial of Thievery’ commendation. You can start working on the commendation as soon as you clear the fog during this Tall Tale.

If you are just looking to complete ‘Trial of Thievery’, your first step is to make speak with Stan!
Trial of Thievery Commendation
To complete the Trial of Thievery commendation, you’ll need to steal the Idol o’ Many Hands from Stan. However, before you can do that, you’ll first need to persuade Stan to tell you who owns the Headless Monkey, get its Bill of Sale from Meathook, and steal Stan’s Office Key.
Speak with Stan
Once you find Stan, approach him, and he will start talking to you. After he finishes his pitch, you must have him ask him about four different vessels around the shipyard: the Grog Rowboat, The Vociferous Carmichael, The Black Pearl, and the Headless Monkey.
To ask him about the ship, interact with the white wooden sign next to each. You can interact with them in any order.
After Stan gives you his pitch for all four vessels, meet him at the front of his office. Talk to him again and choose the last dialogue option, asking about the cheapest ship.
After he tells you about pricing, choose the new fourth dialogue option, asking who purchased the Headless Monkey. He will inform you that Meathook, who lives on Hook Island, owns The Headless Monkey.
You can now ask Meathook about the Headless Monkey and work on tickling The Beast.
Speak with Meathook
Head over to Meathook on Hook Island. Approach Meathook and talk to him after he tells you what’s with The Beast. Choose the last dialogue option, saying you are there about The Headless Monkey. Meathook will ask you to help him put The Beast back in its cage.
Repair the Cage
You’ll first need to fix The Beast’s cage before you can catch The Beast.
Remove the five broken cutlasses from the cage and repair it with the Wooden Planks you can pick up on the side of his house. It’s now time to fix the lever.
Head outside and go to the Forest on Hook Island’s East side. You will find a Rare Mop Tree Sapling. Interact with it to break off a Mop Tree Stick. Bring the stick to the lever to fix it.
Catch The Beast
After you repair the cage, find Meathook’s Concentrated Banana Grease. You can find it in one of the four pieces of furniture you can interact with and open inside his house. Once you find it, you must look for a scrap of music. If you pick up this scrap music, you will learn a new Shanty to tame The Beast.
Look under Meathook’s pillow on his bed, and you will find the scrap music. Pick it up to learn the Shanty, ‘Summon The Beast.’
Now that you know the Shanty, head outside, walk through the Forest, and climb up the mountain behind Meathook’s house. Once you reach The Beast’s lair, equip any instrument, select the Shanty’ Summon The Beast’, and start to play.
Play your instrument until a music queue plays and The Beast reveals itself. The Beast will then hop down so you can bravely pick it up.
Speak with Meathook
Place The Beast in its cage and use the lever to seal it shut. Meathook will be pleased and give you the Bill of Sale for the Headless Monkey.
Speak to Stan
With the Bill of Sale in your Quest Book, you can return to Stan. Talk to him and tell him you have the Bill of Sale. He will then walk over to the ship customizations. Talk to him about the cannons, wheel, and capstan. After you do, he will then walk over to the furnishings. Talk to him until you persuade him to get inside the cupboard. Once he steps inside and closes the door you can interact with it to lock him inside.
Steal Stan's Office Key
Now that you have locked Stan inside the cupboard, you can freely steal Stan’s Office Key. Steal it and use it to open up his office. Inside, you’ll find his ledger and a safe.
Open Stan's Safe
Pick up the ledger and flip to the last page. You will find the code you need to use to crack the safe. Stan will have written the code like, “Left 3 Right 4 Left 3,” or “Left 2 Right 3 Left 2.”
Put down the ledger and interact with the safe. Turn the handle following the code’s directions, and you will open the safe. Inside is the real Idol o’ Many Hands. Pick up the idol, and Corina will appear outside. Hand her the Idol o’ Many Hands to complete the Trial of Thievery and unlock the commendation!
