There are many tools you can use to ambush an adversary in the Sea of Thieves! From surprise Gunpowder Barrels to sneaky Poison Darts from a Blowpipe, every pirate needs to stay alert if they don’t want an untimely trip to the Ferry of the Damned!
Another tool to catch your enemies off guard is Traps! To master the art of trapping, you’ll need to complete the Pitfall Practitioner Commendation, which will have you setting traps, disarming traps, and even loading traps with a sneaky surprise!
Pitfall Practitioner
Complete all other trap Commendations.
To complete this Commendation, you must complete the Dance Off Danger, Secret Snare Setter, Red Alert Raider, and Trap Ease Artist Commendations.
Dance Off Danger
Set a trap with a Jigball loaded and make at least two enemies dance.
To complete this Commendation, you must make two enemies dance from a Trap you loaded with a Jigball.
The enemies can be pirates, Skeletons, Ocean Crawlers, or Phantoms. You’ll have an easier time setting a Trap with a Jigball during a World Event or Voyage that has lots of enemies at once, such as active Skeleton Forts or Order of Souls Bounty Voyages.
You can find Jigballs randomly in Resource Barrels, Rowboats, and Storage Crates across the Sea of Thieves. Once you have one, you can load it into your Trap by Crouching and interacting with the Trap.
Secret Snare Setter
Dispatch other pirates with buried traps.
To complete this Commendation, you must dispatch five pirates from other crews with buried traps. Traps deal about 25 damage, one-fourth of a pirate’s health, so you’ll want to load the Traps with items such as Blunderbombs and Firebombs to deal additional damage needed to dispatch a pirate.
You can also bury two Traps near each other as triggered Traps can trigger nearby Traps causing a chain reaction.
To bury a Trap, you must deploy it on sand or dirt. Then, equip your Shovel, approach the Trap, and use the same Button or Key you would use to bury a piece of treasure to bury the Trap. You can bury it twice.
While you can hurt pirates in your crew, they will not count toward the Commendation. You must dispatch pirates in other crews to receive credit.
You can dispatch the same pirates five times or five different pirates.
Red Alert Raider
Set a trap on your ship with a red flare loaded and have another pirate or enemy trigger it.
To complete this Commendation, you must have another pirate or enemy trigger your trap placed on your ship with a red flare loaded.
You can only load a Trap while you are Crouched, so after you deploy it on your ship, Crouch and approach it. Load it with one of the red flares from your ship’s Cannonball Barrel. Placing a Trap at the top of your ship’s ladders is ideal, as it will be hard for another pirate to bypass it.
Trap Ease Artist
Disarm enemy traps.
To complete this Commendation, you must Disarm ten enemy Traps. You can only Disarm Traps while Crouched.
When you encounter a Trap deployed by another crew, Crouch and slowly approach it until you see a prompt to Disarm it. Interact with the prompt to Disarm the Trap.
If you have room in your inventory, you will pick up the Trap so you can use it yourself.
