Madame Olivia drew forth four names from Briggsy’s skull—three of whom might retain fond memories of Briggsy in return.

Ah, but what about the fourth? Salty. No, that’s not a descriptor. “Salty” is the name of an undead parrot, who once worked with Wanda—or Captain Warsmith. Salty does not exactly think of fondly of Briggsy, and neither does the author of these journals.

Salty was terrified of Briggsy. In his terror, he betrayed a Trapmaker known as the Trickster. With Salty’s assistance, Briggsy kidnapped the Trickster and forced her to design and craft traps that would protect Briggsy’s most prized possessions.

Here you’ll find the locations and text for each Journal in Art of the Trickster.

The location clues to these journals all lead to rather large islands—islands where the Trickster laid her traps.

The text provides insight into the Trickster’s mind and why she despises the greed the inevitably warps Briggsy’s own.

Since you likely stumbled onto this page while trying to find these journals, we’ll begin with the locations. Watch your step!

Art of the Trickster Journal Commendation

Where are the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale Journals?

Remember:
These journals appear only if the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale is active!

So, before you start your search for these journals, go visit that skittish skeletal parrot on Plunder Valley: Salty.

Just in front of Salty, you’ll see the Tall Tale book. Vote on that book to activate the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale, and its five journals will appear throughout the Sea of Thieves.

The Location for Art of the Trickster Journal #1

The first step in completing the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale involves solving a skeleton puzzle room on Plunder Valley. This room also holds your first journal.

You will find the journal on the room’s center rock, basking in a light glow from the nearby mushrooms.

The Location for Art of the Trickster Journal #2

You will find this journal on top of Discovery Ridge next to one of the Trickster’s symbols and barrels.

There are many barrels and many Tricker symbols strewn across Discovery Ridge, and this particular group of barrels and symbol is right in the center of the island.

So—admittedly—describing this location in words is not the most helpful form of assistance we can offer. Instead, we recommend you click the link below the image to see it on the map.

Head on over to Sailor’s Bounty. Aye, if you’re sailing straight from Discovery Ridge, it’s a bit of a journey. Luckily, you’ll find all three remaining journals on this island.

When you arrive at Sailor’s Bounty, head on up to it’s hollowed out center. Drop down. Then take whichever treacherous cavernous path you dare down into the belly of the beast.

Once you make your way past all of the tricks and traps, you will emerge in Trapmaker’s lair. There are three journals in this lair.

Looking around, you may spot an anvil—a classic for any trapmaker. You will find one such journal next to that anvil.

Where else might we find a journal? Hmm… perhaps near a convenient writing spot. Maybe we should take a peek under those work benches.

What do the Art of the Trickster Tall Tale Journals Say?

The Text for Art of the Trickster Journal #1

This journal is titled, “The Perfect Trap

It reads:

Even while being forced to work against my will – and I don’t think I don’t know which bird-brain is responsible – I still have my pride.

As the greatest Trapmaker the Sea of Thieves has ever seen, I must devise something brilliant to protect an equally brilliant treasure.

How, then, shall I prove the effectiveness of my creation? Why, by using a few greedy, grog-addled gold-diggers as guinea-pigs!

I shall begin my experiments upon Discovery Ridge. A few barrels packed with gewgaws should entice pirates into my game…

The Text for Art of the Trickster Journal #2

This journal is titled, “Bait and Switch

It reads:

My first test relied on the curiosity of the participant. First, I primed the location with some supplies that might attract a passer-by.

Next, a simple wooden lever was placed by the barrels. When utilized, it would strike a flint and so ignite a hidden powder-keg.

I had rather assumed natural whimsy would see the lever pulled once spotted, and tucked myself away to observe what came next.

The first pirate to arrive promptly wrenched my lever from its housing and absconded with it. “Nice hat stand”, I heard him remark.

Subterfuge bests psychology when dealing withs such avaricious crooks. I shall return to my workshop, and to the drawing board…

The Text for Art of the Trickster Journal #3

This journal is titled, “We Want Plates

It reads:

Some experimentation with weight and counterweights have allowed me to devise a new trigger, as well as protection for my workshop.

Even working with wood, for metal is precious and in short supply, I can use the weight of any intruder to spring a nearby trap.

As sensitive as these devices are, it is nearly impossible to disguise them entirely. Thus, they are best deployed in darker areas.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to completely muffle the noise made by the mechanism when someone blunders onto it.

A cunning criminal with sharp ears might, I supposed, get enough warning to save their own skin. Regardless, I am making progress…
Trickster Journal #3 on Sailor's Bounty

The Text for Art of the Trickster Journal #4

This journal is titled, “Making My Point

It reads:

Recently, I’ve been testing different kinds of blades to see which are the most useful for ‘deterring’ intruders.

I’ve had some success with sword traps, as they look fearsome and have an excellent range. They’re expensive to make, of course.

Saw traps use shorter, duller metal blades, and are definitely useful in confined space. Still, they lack a certain style…

Or should I go back to the tried-and-tested “wall o’ stakes”? Though primitive, you can’t argue with the classics. Decisions, decisions…
Trickster Journal #4 on Sailor's Bounty

The Text for Art of the Trickster Journal #5

This journal is titled, “A Worthy Opponent

It reads:

The more time I spend with Briggsy, the more I wonder if all pirates are ultimately fated to be consumed by their own greed.

Is the endless pursuit of gold and glitter, in and of itself, the greatest trap of all?

As an experiment, I have decided to leave a trail that will lead to the very treasure I have been commanded to protect.

They’ll be devious clues, of course. Ones that goad, deliberately mislead and test the mettle of those who read them.

One last game, then, winner takes all. Is there someone out there on the Sea of Thieves worthy of the stone? We shall see…
Trickster Journal #5 on Sailor's Bounty

Congratulations!

If you’ve ever-so-gingerly tip-toed to each location, you will have found all five journals. In so doing, you will free the trapped commendation: Traps and Treasure.

You will also learn a bit more about how these traps came to be, and how greed might just be the most cunning trap of all.

Note: Just like weaving through the Trickster’s traps, checking your commendations might take more than one attempt. If on your first attempt your commendation still appears trapped behind that lock, never fear.

Leave the commendations page, dust yourself off, and try again. Your second attempt should spring that commendation free.
